2005-12-23 Happy Holidays

There will be no new entries until after the New Year as I break for the holidays. Yes I said holidays and did not choose one specific holiday because I don’t know who will be reading this. Hopefully the president will not destroy any more civil liberties, violate more laws, piss off more people and countries around the world or start any new wars before everyone returns from holiday breaks to keep an eye on him. Remember, it’s a democracy, so you can’t say it wasn’t my turn to watch him, because IT’S EVERYONE’S TURN TO WATCH HIM - ALL THE TIME.

In 2006 - protest, ask questions, stay informed, share your knowledge, join a non-profit public service group, volunteer, set an example, MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

2005-12-22Report on the Lies

It doesn’t get any better than this. A report from the office of congressman John Conyers about all those nasty pre-war LIES we were told to trick most of America into supporting the war in Iraq. The report is called “The Constitution in Crisis: The Downing Street Minutes and Deception, Manipulation, Torture, Retribution, and Coverups in the Iraq War” and you can use the link below to get your copy.

2005-12-20 FLIP-FLOP

When you listen to all the members of the Bush administration defend the use of wiretaps without court approval, saying the president has the power, no laws were broken and we hear the president admit he ordered these wiretaps in his speech and press conference, step into the time machine and remember this quote from Bush himself back on April 20, 2004.

Secondly, there are such things as roving wiretaps. Now, by the way, any time you hear the United States government talking about wiretap, it requires -- a wiretap requires a court order. Nothing has changed, by the way. When we're talking about chasing down terrorists, we're talking about getting a court order before we do so. It's important for our fellow citizens to understand, when you think Patriot Act, constitutional guarantees are in place when it comes to doing what is necessary to protect our homeland, because we value the Constitution.

2005-12-19 All Iraq All the Time

We have just experienced a week right out of the Karl Rove media control handbook. The Bush administration has been throwing all their eggs in the Iraq election basket and they want us to buy into it too. Somehow last week they managed to make the Iraq election the lead story for 5 weekdays in a row, by letting the event trickle out a bit at a time. We touted the day the prisoners or those in hospitals voted, then absentee votes by people outside Iraq, then the eve of voting, then the actual voting and finally the beginning of the counting. All this while Bush gave a speech each day before different audiences about Iraq, that took place during the day and were viewed by few, but reinforced a push to keep Iraq the lead story. Even with this reinforcement as a motive, it didn’t make much sense to my why he would give all these speeches until I heard that he asked for a prime time network slot Sunday night (last night). All those little speeches were just rehearsals for the big Sunday event and each audience was just a focus group to see how the message was received. The prime time speech was more of the same, stay the course, everything’s going great, don’t listen to the critics, blah blah blah, and we must do this because of 9-11. In today’s press conference, Bush again makes a verbal slip confusing Osama and Saddam. I’m going to keep saying this over and over until people get it. THERE IS NO CONNECTION BETWEEN 9-11 AND SADDAM OR IRAQ. There was even a Presidential Daily Briefing from Sep. 21 2001 that gave the president this information, yet they all continue to LIE and LIE and LIE more about this one simple FACT. By the way, this is all happening while we are finding out new information about the US government spying on American citizens and the Bush administration deciding that things like wiretapping laws don’t apply to them. Bush in a press conference today and Gonzales in a TV interview say the constitution gives them this power. When asked if anyone has been arrested and convicted using this surveillance, Gonzalez does everything but answer the question. Bush uses several questions about surveillance power to attack anyone who questions the PATRIOT ACT. He says, it is inexcusable for the Senate not to pass the PATRIOT ACT. Well Mr. President, it is inexcusable for you to continue to suggest that there is a connection between Iraq and 9-11.

In a war/terror related issue, read the story linked below about a student who received a visit from federal agents because he asked for an interlibrary loan of a “flagged” book. I recall a Mel Gibson movie, where he goes to a bookstore and buys a flagged book, which makes the government computers set off alarms, and the agents swoop in. Not far from the truth, is it?

2005-12-14 Domestic Terrorists?

Forget those foreign extremists. Pay no attention to who is buying or selling military weapons. If you really want to get a handle on terrorism, keep track of those pesky domestic peace activists. That’s the way to do it. If you don’t believe me, then believe the Pentagon, because that’s what they’re doing. Check out the story linked below.

2005-12-13 Bush Takes Questions

It must have been a cold day in hell yesterday, because Bush gave a speech to a non-military audience and even answered unrehearsed questions.

     http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2005/12/13/audience_hits_bush_with_tough_questions_on_progress/

Now the president when asked admitted there were about 30,000 Iraqis killed in the war so far. This seems optimistic, because the actual count may be much higher. There has never been any accurate count, but the link below will take you to a site that lists about 30,000 “REPORTED” deaths. It does not allow for unreported deaths, and in the chaos that consumes Iraq, many believe the unreported count may be higher that the reported count. With all the talk out of the Bush administration about how evil Saddam was and how many he killed, we aren’t doing much better.

     http://www.iraqbodycount.org/

Bush was also asked about using 9-11 to justify the war in Iraq, but the reply wasn’t very clear and I’m not sure we will ever get a straight answer on this one.

2005-12-13 Bush Interview

Brian Williams of NBC did a televised interview with Bush that was just ridiculous. You can read the full transcript, linked below, but although the questions were fine, the answers were not. Sure the president can answer anyway he wants, but when the answers are as incredibly poor as Bush’s were, the interviewer (Williams) should challenge them. It seems that this is just another opportunity for Bush to get “face time” and say whatever he wants. Here is my favorite example in a question about hurricane Katrina;

Williams: Were you watching the coverage? Were you seeing the same pictures that Americans were seeing?

President Bush: I was. I was.

Now I recall a story about how the Whitehouse staff had to record the newscasts showing Katrina devastation and then had a discussion about who was going to bring him the bad news. (See 2005-09-12 and 2005-10-11 below) After having no reaction for days, who is he kidding, and why did this go unchallenged?

2005-12-12 Emails

The other day I received one of those chain political emails from a friend titled “DID YOU KNOW?”

I receive many political emails each day and most are bogus, some are not. Some come from activist groups that are supporting or fighting a piece of legislation, are clearly identified as such, state their argument for or against, often include statistics and back them up with some links to learn more about the subject, and have contact information for legislators to make it easy for me to voice my opinion. Other emails are some political rant or collection of statistics that are attributed to a person I’ve never heard of with an important title and/or employer to make them seem legitimate. These however, never contain any back up information or links to support the information or legitimacy of the author. Usually the statements in these emails turn out to be false, and I have several good sources I use to check them. The one I received from my friend Susan had information that was for the most part true, but because of the way it was expressed and the underlying political tone of the email, I decided to use it as an opportunity to open a dialogue. Below is the original email as well as the reply, the reply to the reply, and the reply that followed that.

IRAQ War Progress..      DID YOU KNOW?      Of course I didn't know. How could I?
Did you know that 47 countries have reestablished their embassies in
Iraq?
Did you know that the Iraqi government currently employs 1.2 million Iraqi people?

Did you know that 3100 schools have been renovated, 364 schools are under rehabilitation, 263 schools are now under construction and 38 new schools have been built in
Iraq?
Did you know that
Iraq's higher educational structure consists of 20 Universities, 46 Institutes or colleges and 4 research centers, all currently operating?
Did you know that 25 Iraqi students departed for the United States in January 2005 for the re-established Fulbright program?
Did you know that the Iraqi Navy is operational?! They have 5- 100-foot patrol craft, 34 smaller vessels and a naval infantry regiment.
Did you know that
Iraq's Air Force consists of three operational squadrons, which includes 9 reconnaissance and 3 US C-130 transport aircraft (under Iraqi operational control) which operate day and night, and will soon add 16 UH-1 helicopters and 4 Bell Jet Rangers?
Did you know that
Iraq has a counter-terrorist unit and a Commando Battalion?
Did you know that the Iraqi Police Service has over 55,000 fully trained and equipped police officers?
Did you know that there are 5 Police Academies in
Iraq that produce over 3500 new officers each 8 weeks?
Did you know there are more than 1100 building projects going on in
Iraq? They include 364 schools, 67 public clinics, 15 hospitals, 83 railroad stations, 22 oil facilities, 93 water facilities and 69 electrical facilities.
Did you know that 96% of Iraqi children under the age of 5 have received the first 2 series of polio vaccinations?
Did you know that 4.3 million Iraqi children were enrolled in primary school by mid October?

Did you know that there are 1,192,000 cell phone subscribers in
Iraq and phone use has gone up 158%?
Did you know that
Iraq has an independent media that consists of 75 radio stations, 180 newspapers and 10 television stations?
Did you know that the Baghdad Stock Exchange opened in June of 2004?
Did you know that 2 candidates in the Iraqi presidential election had a televised debate recently?
OF COURSE WE DIDN'T KNOW!
WHY DIDN'T WE KNOW? OUR MEDIA WOULDN'T TELL US!
Instead of reflecting our love for our country, we get photos of flag burning incidents at Abu Ghraib and people throwing snowballs at the presidential motorcades.
The lack of accentuating the Positive in
Iraq serves two purposes. it is intended to undermine the world's perception of the United States thus minimizing consequent support, and it is intended to discourage American citizens!
---- Above facts are verifiable on the Department of Defense web site. .......Please pass it on!......................
IN GOD WE TRUST

I could easily write a similar list of things that have gone poorly, statistics that don't support our actions, convicted criminals the
US has employed or trusted, and things we were told about Iraq that turned out to not be true. This is a complex situation, but when we constantly paint insurgency as the great evil in media and by government officials, let me ask this question; If the army of another country, from half way around the world, marched into your home town, without being attacked by you first, and said we are in control now, we are setting up a new
government and we will control the process by which you select your leaders, while conducting military actions that imprison or kill some of your neighbors or family members, wouldn't you become part of the insurgency?
Glen

Isn't it good to hear that some progress is being made.  Listening to the news you feel everything is going badly.  That's all.   Would it not be worthwhile to say good for that.  How would you like to be a soldier over there and have the opposite feeling.  They would have no hope at all.

I do not know the answer, no one can say they want to be in a war.

Tell me, exactly what would you do and what would you have done.  Do you really think Hussein and his thugs were nice people.  They did find training camps over there ( in one area of the country, we do know he made chemical weapons etc).  So, please tell me-what is the solution.

I feel for the soldiers and there families also, we should be able to agree on that.  What I forwarded is for them.

Love and God Bless, Susan

This is a long one, but I couldn’t resist.

If I were a soldier in Iraq, the positive news I would like to hear is that they have restored the money and services that were cut from veterans benefits, or that the government was finally going to provide the vehicle and body armor that they have been promising and still have only partially delivered, or that we would spend less time protecting highly paid contractors and more time doing our own work, or that when my commanders requested more troops or supplies than the administrant plan called for, their request would be taken seriously instead of being relieved of duty, or many, many other things that could be positive for our troops. If we want to support the troops, the best thing we can do is get them responsible leadership. After all, they don’t make all these horrible tactical decisions; they are just following orders, and face consequences if they don’t.

As far as negative news, imagine what the news would be like if it was not manipulated by our government. To date, they have been caught producing fake news reports and distributing them to local stations for air, paying broadcasters to promote their agenda, banning news images of dead soldiers caskets arriving back here in the US (coverage we have seen in other conflicts), planting a fake reporter in the Whitehouse press corps to ask softball or leading questions at press conferences, having a US contractor write stories for Iraqi newspapers and paying them to run these reports, having the presidential speeches and “town hall meetings” only in front of carefully screened audiences chosen to eliminate any opposition and give the appearance of wide spread support, staging a fake “unrehearsed” video conference with the troops in Iraq and then denying it was staged even after tapes of the rehearsal surface, discontinuing government yearly statistical reports that were producing unflattering statistics, constantly quoting statistics in speeches and press conferences that are known to be false and never being challenged on these falsehoods (see the next one for why), intimidating journalists by excluding them from future press events if they ask an unrehearsed or unapproved question (Helen Thomas is a good example), staging events like the toppling of the Saddam statue after the invasion of Baghdad (yes it was a PsyOps event and you can look it up to confirm) and many, many more. Now these are just the press manipulation events that we know about and the ones I can think of right now. Imagine how many more we don’t know about and then imagine what would be on the news if they didn’t manipulate the media.

Now for Saddam and the weapons; although no one really thought Saddam was a nice guy and he did have weapons in the early 90s (that we sold to him), no WMDs of any kind, chemical or otherwise have ever been found since our invasion, nor have we found any evidence of weapons programs even though we were told over and over that they definitely exist and “we know where they are”. When Powell appeared at the UN with photos of mobile weapons labs, they were not photos at all, but drawing of what we think they would be like. Check the photos of this event and see for yourself. In fact, the background story behind the CIA leak investigation is that the Bush administration was told the claim that Iraq was trying to purchase uranium from Niger was false and based on a forged document before the president used this fake claim in the State of the Union address to justify going to war. The leak occurred as an attack on the man (by outing and thereby endangering his wife) who disproved the claim and decided to speak out after Bush used it anyway.

On the al Qaeda front, although every administration member tries in some way to connect Iraq and Saddam to al Qaeda and 9-11 in every speech, press conference or other public appearance, no proof of any connection of any kind has ever been produced. Many people believe there is a connection simply because they keep saying it over and over. The actual al Qaeda training camps that were discovered were in Afghanistan, not Iraq. Which brings me to one of my favorite questions; How did chasing Osama turn into overthrowing Saddam? Osama is a religious fundamentalist, who believes that Islam should be the supreme law and Saddam ran a secular state where he was the supreme law. Saddam had no interest in cutting into his own power by accepting those who wanted religious rule. Remember he’s a little crazy that way. What we have done now, is taken a secular state and transformed it into a religious state. Read the new Iraqi constitution and discover the passages that make Islam the supreme law.

So how have we gone so wrong and made it to where we are today? There is a small group of extremely powerful, politically connected insiders who banded together in the early 90s and formally emerged as a unified group in the mid 90s, called The Project for a New American Century. (www.newamericancentury.org) On the surface, this group seems like a collection of patriots that have America’s best interest at heart. It takes quite a bit of reading to discover their real agenda however. These people believe that it is America’s right to take over the world, make us the next great empire. Further, they believe that to do so would require a huge military build up and unrestricted support for anything military involving sacrifices from the public of a monetary, political and civil liberty nature. The most important document from this group (http://www.newamericancentury.org/RebuildingAmericasDefenses.pdf) also states that this type of unrestricted support will never exist in the US political environment unless we experience a “catastrophic and catalyzing event – like a new Pearl Harbor”. Now what we saw on 9-11 was this “new Pearl Harbor”, which played right into their plan. We immediately saw an increase in military spending, military enlistment and the passage of the USA PATRIOT act, which had some provisions that would never be accepted as constitutional under any other circumstances. Their plan also called for our increased presence, occupation and finally control of the world, starting in the Middle East and specifically starting In Iraq. They decided that Iraq would be the best launching pad for spreading Western Democracy and our political influence throughout the Middle East. So now I will ask again, how did chasing Osama turn into overthrowing Saddam? These people are using our troops as pawns in a giant global chess game. Is that supporting the troops? All this sounds a bit radical and conspiracy theory like, but it is true and it does exist. If you track the people involved in this group, they are all in positions of power or great influence within our government today. The more you learn about this group, the more frightened you will become. Their plan is the one we are following and it’s now working.

Finally, I don’t want you to think I have some sort of problem with Republicans. Republicans and Democrats in general want similar goals, but often have different ideas about how to get there. I see nothing wrong with republican ideals like fiscal responsibility, states rights, smaller government and more, but I don’t see how the current republican leadership that is in power in our government today represent any of these values. In fact, their actions seem to be aimed in the exact opposite direction. We have the largest federal government in history, with the greatest spending, having borrowed more foreign money in this administration than in all the preceding administrations combined, with attempts at federal interference in local issues (like the Schiavo case), fewer civil rights, an over burdened military, and as the latest reports from the 9-11 commission state, failing grades in preparing for our security at home. I am personally baffled that many in the general public continue to believe and support after failures that would have completely destroyed any other administration in our history.

Had enough?

I hope it wasn’t too much,

Glen

2005-12-09 Robin the Hood

Today I will only choose 1 topic because it is so disturbing it needs to stand alone. The House yesterday approved $56,100,000,000.00 in tax cuts. If my memory serves me, it was only a few weeks ago that these same legislators were approving cuts in Medicaid, the school lunch program and other programs because there was not enough money in the budget to support them. These are all programs that help the needy, and they had to be cut. Yesterdays cuts were mostly on capital gains and dividend taxes which mostly benefit those who can afford to own large amounts of securities, the wealthy. So in summing up, we take from the poor and give to the rich. It’s not Robin Hood, but instead it’s Robin the Hood. Your GOP at work!

And my favorite for today, the federal government has made lists and information available about its employees (except positions like undercover agents and other identity sensitive jobs) available since 1816, that is until now. In another unique bushism, this administration doesn’t think people have a right to know in a free society. Thankfully, the University of Syracuse has take the federal government to court over this issue.

2005-12-06 Presidential Speech

The following speech by the president is one you may not have heard or read before.

It has been abbreviated slightly and the jumps are marked. Read carefully.

Tonight I want to talk to you on a subject of deep concern to all Americans and to many people in all parts of the world the war in Iraq   I believe that one of the reasons for the deep division about Iraq is that many Americans have lost confidence in what their Government has told them about our policy.  The American people cannot and should not be asked to support a policy which involves the overriding issues of war and peace unless they know the truth about that policy.   ...   The war was causing deep division at home and criticism from many of our friends as well as our enemies abroad.     In view of these circumstances there were some who urged that I end the war at once by ordering the immediate withdrawal of all American forces.     From a political standpoint this would have been a popular and easy course to follow.      For the future of peace, precipitate withdrawal would thus be a disaster of immense magnitude.     A nation cannot remain great if it betrays its allies and lets down its friends.     Our defeat and humiliation in Iraq without question would promote recklessness in the councils of those great powers who have not yet abandoned their goals of world conquest.     This would spark violence wherever our commitments help maintain the peace in the Middle East, in Berlin, eventually even in the Western Hemisphere.     Ultimately, this would cost more lives.     It would not bring peace; it would bring more war.     For these reasons, I rejected the recommendation that I should end the war by immediately withdrawing all of our forces. I chose instead to change American policy on both the negotiating front and battlefront.   ...   We are Iraqizing the search for peace.      Under the plan, I ordered first a substantial increase in the training and equipment of Iraqi forces.   ...   —The Iraqis have continued to gain in strength.  As a result they have been able to take over combat responsibilities from our American troops.   ...   We have adopted a plan which we have worked out in cooperation with the Iraqis for the complete withdrawal of all U.S. combat ground forces, and their replacement by Iraqi forces on an orderly scheduled timetable. This withdrawal will be made from strength and not from weakness. As Iraqi forces become stronger, the rate of American withdrawal can become greater.      My fellow Americans, I am sure you can recognize from what I have said that we really only have two choices open to us if we want to end this war. -I can order an immediate, precipitate withdrawal of all Americans from Iraq without regard to the effects of that action.     -Or we can persist in our search for a just peace … through continued implementation of our plan for Iraqization if necessary a plan in which we will withdraw all our forces from Iraq on a schedule in accordance with our program, as the Iraqis become strong enough to defend their own freedom.     I have chosen this second course.     It is not the easy way.     It is the right way.     It is a plan which will end the war and serve the cause of peace not just in Iraq but in the Pacific and in the world.     In speaking of the consequences of a precipitate withdrawal, I mentioned that our allies would lose confidence in America.     Far more dangerous, we would lose confidence in ourselves. Oh, the immediate reaction would be a sense of relief that our men were coming home. But as we saw the consequences of what we had done, inevitable remorse and divisive recrimination would scar our spirit as a people.     In San Francisco a few weeks ago, I saw demonstrators carrying signs reading: "Lose in Iraq, bring the boys home."     Well, one of the strengths of our free society is that any American has a right to reach that conclusion and to advocate that point of view. But as President of the United States, I would be untrue to my oath of office if I allowed the policy of this Nation to be dictated by the minority who hold that point of view and who try to impose it on the Nation by mounting demonstrations in the street.      And so tonight to you, the great silent majority of my fellow Americans, I ask for your support.

The excerpts above are from a speech given by President Richard M. Nixon in 1969 about the war in Vietnam. The word “Iraq” has been substituted for “Vietnam” and “South Vietnam”. See how similar this speech is to the one Bush gave on November 30th. (See 2005-11-30 below)

2005-12-05 The Plan and The 9-11 Commission

If we have a plan for Iraq, why is the USAID offering your tax dollars ($1,020,000,000.00) to consulting firms to design and implement a social and economic stabilization program for cities in Iraq?

Isn’t is convenient that the second part of the 9-11 commission report, the one that says how poorly the government has done in the post 9-11 world, didn’t come out before the 2004 election. Now one year later and after the hard lessons of Katrina, we find out that all Bush’s talk about being the one who will keep us safe is confirmed once again as pure BULL SHIT.

2005-12-01 Glen’s Letter to the Today Show

Could The Today Show be more to the right?

Well, yes it could, it could be FOX news, but my issue as I was screaming at the TV this morning is that it shouldn’t be to the Right or Left at all. You pretend to be a news show with reporters and journalists, yet the show continually displays a lean to the Right, and Ms. Couric should never be allowed to handle political topics, because her obvious bias distorts the report. I have become intolerant of her pressuring guests from the Left while lobbing softballs at guests from the Right. Let me tell you about this morning’s Today supported propaganda just to make an example. You began the show as you should have, examining the presidents address yesterday about the war in Iraq. After some typical clips and the brief overview from the Washington correspondent, you move to commentary/analysis by opposing sides. Now the president gets unlimited, uninterrupted, channel saturated coverage, every time he wants to unleash his message, and this is followed by clips and commentary on every news report on every channel. There is little balance, when you invite an opposing view from someone like Senator John Kerry and Lauer keeps interrupting his answers. I understand, that your show has to follow format and lives within time restrictions, so interruptions may be necessary, but that doesn’t explain what happened after Kerry’s comments. Next a Cheney aid, I believe it was Matlin, comments from the right with Couric as the interviewer. Her answers are never interrupted, she is not challenged in the same way as Kerry and she is allowed to make statements that any political journalist with any self respect would challenge, yet she is given free rein. She begins with a recycled reference to Kerry as Flip-Flopper in an effort to immediately discredit the previous commentary. Now you could let this go, but when she is unchallenged, she now knows she has a free ride and the rhetoric escalates. I’ll set aside the political spin that we could argue about endlessly and stick to just a few specific instances where Couric didn’t just drop the ball; she wasn’t even in the game. In an effort to seem balanced, Couric brings up the Hirsch article in the New Yorker, and this is immediately dismissed without any follow up. When Hirsch writes one of his controversial articles, you can’t just let it be brushed off. Why is this significant you ask? Hirsch has never been wrong. Next we are told that the Democrats just keep calling Bush a liar and there is no evidence to support that claim. Yes, there is evidence. That evidence keeps growing and just because network news programs devote little or no time to that evidence, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. If the roles were reversed and the Democrat made this claim, they would be pressed, and pressed hard on the issue. Finally, the one that pushed me over the edge and made me turn your show off, was the statement that we had 3000 people die here, as every Bush administration representative continually tries to tie the war in Iraq with 9-11. There is no connection between our starting a war in Iraq and 9-11. That’s worth repeating – There is no connection between our starting a war in Iraq and 9-11. No matter how many times they say it, it will never be so, and each time these statements go unchallenged. It is irresponsible for the Today Show as a “news program” to let these statements go without question. We were not attacked by Saddam or Iraq and this is a war of choice that has only distracted us from tracking those who actually did attack us. How can you let these statements pass over and over and over again? Think about all that we (Americans) were told prior to war in Iraq and then consider what has happened since and what has actually turned out to be true. Virtually none of the pre-war information was true, yet you continue to challenge opponents more then supporters of the war who constantly use 9-11 to justify a war that has nothing to do with 9-11. As a final note, when a guest talks about stopping the insurgency, it will NEVER happen. Consider this, If a country from the other side of the world marched into your home town and said we are in control now, we are changing your government, military, economy and everything else you are familiar with and doing it our way, wouldn’t you resist? I have included my own review of the presidents address that I posted on line yesterday at www.wwmeli.org/PostElection

2005-11-30 Same-Old, Same-Old

In a “major policy speech” Bush tries to rebuild support for the war in Iraq. The only thing that seems new here is that he admits that there were problems so we had to adjust and the release of a booklet outlining the “plan”. This is the closest he has ever come to admitting mistakes and the “plan” is a bit late, still vague and easier to produce now after the events have already reshaped our efforts. Once again his address was before a military audience, who must pay attention, behave and be supportive. He hates to be challenged.

I’ll comment on some of his talking points, which include;

He will take recommendations from the military leaders on the ground in regard to required troop strength. – Is this the same administration that was told by the general in charge at the start of this war, that more troops would be needed for a successful campaign? That general was forced into retirement. He broke the first rule, Thou shalt not disagree”. Later, he uses this troop strength topic to insert the latest republican talking point to attack Democrats, “CUT and RUN”. Almost every republican has accused democrats or liberals of wanting to “CUT and RUN” in the last few weeks. This is an orchestrated effort to make democrats look weak, with no resolve. Those who call for a withdrawal schedule, do so because they do not want more US troops to die because of a failed strategy in a war based on false intelligence. Even Murtha didn’t propose a cut and run strategy, but instead a redeployment of troops from across Iraq to around the borders. This would be to keep outsiders from interfering while the Iraqis are forced to step up to the plate and take charge of the main part of their country. If we don’t push them, they will be happy to let us do it. He also tries to divide the Democrats with a quote from Democratic Senator Joe Lieberman that supports his plan. Joe Lieberman hasn’t been a Democrat for quite some time, so I say big deal.

Bush also uses the “Cut and Run” quote in a different way. He says that if we CUT and RUN, it will invite new attacks on America. He also says he won’t let Iraq be used as a launching pad for attacks on America. – This continues the continuing effort to connect the war in Iraq with 9-11. In fact, he makes a 9-11 reference in the first line of his speech and has several others scattered throughout the remainder of his address. OK, one more time for those who missed it, Iraq had nothing to do with the attack on 9-11, and aren’t we using Iraq as our launching pad for imperialism in the Middle East? He even admits it when he says, “spread the hope of freedom across the broader Middle East” and “freedom is the destiny of every man woman and child on earth”. What he means is, our concept of a free society is the only correct one, and we must spread it across the globe to everyone. We are right, everyone else is wrong and everyone must do it our way.

He says we will stay until our mission of defeating the terrorists in Iraq is complete. – Didn’t they tell us that we attacked Iraq because they had weapons of mass destruction, or could develop them, or had chemical weapons, or stockpiles of them, or because Saddam was a brutal dictator that needed to be removed from power, or any one of about 30 other reasons? When did the mission become to remove terrorists? Didn’t we attract those terrorists? Didn’t we attack an unarmed country? Wouldn’t you fight back if an army from half way around the world attacked your country? Aren’t we a big part of the problem here? He says we must “complete the mission” and we must achieve “complete victory”. If they keep changing the mission, how will we ever complete it? He even says, “the mission will continue to change”. Didn’t he speak on a aircraft carrier, with a big “Mission Accomplished” sign behind him?

Now he says there are 120 Iraqi police and military battalions ready to fight. – Now, in an effort to spin, he has added police battalions to the count to inflate the numbers, but remember, if you refer to 2005-11-15 below, he said there were 90 just 2 weeks ago. These huge numbers come after military officials and analysts have only been quoting single digit numbers. He does later admit that only ONE Iraqi battalion has achieved complete independence from the “coalition”.

He keeps talking about the coalition. – What coalition? He has lost the trust of the other countries of the world long ago and one by one they have been pulling out. The only major player he can still count on is the UK, who remains because they are just as guilty of pre-war intelligence manipulation and failures as we are.

How long do we have to endure this dribble? We are destroying our economy, our military and our integrity, while we ignore other countries, militant groups or issues that pose real problems for us. Bush also says “And we should not fear the debate in Washington. It's one of the great strengths of our democracy that we can discuss our differences openly and honestly -- even at times of war.” If I were in that audience, I would have stood right up and said, “If you don’t fear debate sir, bring it on, I’m ready right now.”

2005-11-22 Iraq calls for withdrawal

That’s right folks, Iraqi leaders met at a summit in Cairo and called for a withdrawal of foreign troops from their country. So what excuse do we have now to “stay the course” and keep the troops deployed in Iraq when the Iraqis don’t want them. To those that say the democrats don’t have a plan, read Murtha’s plan. I say the republicans are the ones that don’t have a plan, because their idea of a plan is to just leave everything the way it is. Is this their idea of moving forward?

2005-11-21 The Economy & the Goofball

They keep telling us that the economy is good, but with all the money the US borrows, Bush and the republican congress seem to just be running up the bills. Food stamps, Medicaid, student aid and more are under attack by republicans. Obviously to them, these are wasteful, while continued spending in Iraq and extending tax breaks for the wealthy are essential.

Speaking of the war, democrat congressman John Murtha who supported the war in the past, now says it’s time to pull out. Murtha is a retired ex-Marine with a Bronze Star and 2 Purple Hearts, who has always been pro-military and embraced by the Bush administration for that stance. Now that he says there is no more to gain by staying and in fact we are becoming a catalyst for more insurgency and terrorism, republicans in Washington and the right wing media are suddenly attacking his credibility, diminishing his military service, and declaring him irresponsible or unpatriotic. This is an expected change of attitude toward him, now that he has broken the Bush administrations 1st commandment – Thou Shalt Not Publicly Disagree.

2005-11-17 Woodward, Hadley and Bush attacks

So we learned that Stephen Hadley revealed the identity of Valerie Plame to Bob Woodward of the Washington Post before Libby or Rove revealed it. Why did Woodward keep this a secret for so long? Why did he deny he knew? Is this obstructing justice on Woodward’s part? YES. Does this let Libby or Rove off the hook? NO. Libby is charged with false statements and obstruction. In fact, this case would have been over long ago if everyone involved wasn’t withholding information, lying and trying to cover their asses. Let me quickly get to the bottom line on this one. If three (that we know so far) different members of the administration leaked this agents identity, each to different members of the press, all within a short period of time, the odds are that they all didn’t get the same idea at the same time independently. If this leak, as the odds suggest, was planned to leak in several different directions from several different sources, we have a special word to describe this type of activity. CONSPIRACY.

In other news, after a poor republican showing on election night and the ever falling Bush poll numbers, the entire Bush administration has decided to go on the attack. Anyone who questions their actions, suggests they manipulated intelligence or made poor judgments they say is un-American, being political, rewriting history, promoting and supporting terrorism, or any other attack they can think of. It’s more of what they have done all along – attack your opponents and accuse them of what you yourself are guilty of. This tactic has worked for them during the first term, but seems to be faltering in the second term. Too bad for the Bushies.

2005-11-15 Getting defensive over bad numbers

Bush's approval rating is at the lowest of his presidency — 37% in the most recent AP-Ipsos poll and at similar levels in comparable polls. So what is a president to do, GO ON THE ATTACK and even continue to tie the Iraq war to 9-11.

Here are some choice lines from a recent speech:

“On September the 11th, 2001, history called on our nation to defend freedom once again.”

“We had to take a hard look at every threat to America after September the 11th, and when we did, one stood apart: Saddam Hussein.”

“We didn't ask for this global struggle, but we're answering history's call with confidence, and with a comprehensive strategy to win this war.”

“Do we take the word of a madman and forget the lessons of September the 11th, or do we take action to defend our country?”

“We have killed or captured nearly all those directly responsible for the September the 11th attacks.”

“Iraq was only one of seven countries listed as a state sponsor of terror, and it was judged by intelligence agencies around the globe to possess weapons of mass destruction.”

“it is irresponsible for Democrats to now claim that we misled them and the American people.”

“Leaders in my administration and members of the United States Congress from both political parties looked at the same intelligence on Iraq,”

“The truth is that investigations of intelligence on Iraq have concluded that only one person manipulated evidence and misled the world -- and that person was Saddam Hussein.”

“Democrats who voted to authorize the use of force are now rewriting the past. They are playing politics with this issue and they are sending mixed signals to our troops and the enemy. And that's irresponsible.”

There has been no connection ever found between 9-11 and Iraq, but the Bush administration chose to believe the claim of one man who said there was, even after they were told he was unreliable. We have never found any weapons of mass destruction, weapons labs or programs, even though the public was told by members of the Bush administration that “we know where they are”. They chose to focus on sections of the inspectors reports that said what Saddam would like to have (like any world leader) and ignored the parts that said what he did have or was capable of developing. They chose to use a document they believed was evidence Saddam tried to purchase weapons grade uranium, even after they were told the document was a fake. Only one person has ever been convicted on charges related directly to the 9-11 attacks, and he pleaded guilty. Some have been charged and some of them convicted on minor charges such as immigration violations, but the majority of those held have never been charged with anything. Does the U.S. hold people without charge? The founding fathers complained when Great Britain did it and now we are doing it. They chose to edit intelligence documents before they were sent to congress, removing phrases like “would like to”, “could possibly” or other words so the documents would appear more definite, and more alarming. It was the Bush administration that put a fake reporter in the Whitehouse, quoted false statistics, and fed the media PSYOPS managed images to mislead the public about Iraq and the war. If anyone has played politics and been irresponsible throughout this period in history, it is Bush and the members of his administration. To all the quotes above I say BULL SHIT. Use the link below to read the entire speech and also notice all the talk about how the terrorists want to take over Iraq and use it as a launching pad to spread THEIR ideology throughout the Middle East.  If you read the documents from “The Project for a New American Century”, isn’t that exactly what we are trying to do? Take over Iraq and use it for a launching pad to spread OUR ideology throughout the Middle East. This quote confused me too: “Today, there are nearly 90 Iraqi army battalions fighting the terrorists alongside our forces.” This 90 number seems to be pulled out of thin air and is so high that it contradicts any other estimate by anyone else in the world, including our military leaders in charge.

2005-11-10 Glen on Amtrak

The head of Amtrak was fired yesterday. It seems there was a difference in philosophy between him and the Amtrak board. He wants continued funding and the Amtrak board is siding with the Bush administration and is willing to settle for less funds and wants a leader with vision, who will make Amtrak instantly profitable with no resources. There is also some strange idea to split off the Northeast portion into a separate company, because it is profitable. This would help the NE to survive, but would run the rest of Amtrak out of business. Now for my take on the Amtrak issue; For years now, Amtrak has adopted the traditional corporate attitude that if you aren’t making money, you have to cut costs. The only way to cut costs is to cut service. The only way to cut service is to thin out the schedule and offer less trains. This smaller schedule makes the public less confident that there will be a train available when they want to travel. The result of this is that less people use Amtrak. This causes Amtrak to have less income, so they must lower costs. As you can see, this logic goes round and round making the schedule smaller and smaller until we get to the pitiful Amtrak service we have today. Let’s contrast this with the New York City subway system. This system is set up so there are trains every few minutes of every day. The result of this constant and predictable schedule is that people can count on the subway, so they rely on the subway. They never even check a schedule, because the train is always there. Mass transit is a way of life in NY and this is a bonus during times like these with major energy concerns and increased importance in conservation. Although Amtrak will never run as frequently as the subway, the old Amtrak paradigm doesn’t work and they need to increase service, not cut it. This is confusing to some, but consider that if Amtrak ran smaller trains, but on a more frequent, steady, predictable schedule (every 2 hours for example), people would become more confident in the availability of trains and take advantage of that availability. This is why he Northeast corridor of Amtrak does so well. They have increased the number of trains that run between Boston and Washington D.C., as well as increase the speed of these trains, and people take advantage of this increased service. We always talk about thinking outside the box, but in this case Amtrak has been stuck on the same track for years and with the republican administrations lack of sensitivity to the common man (those who use Amtrak), there is no effort being made to switch onto a better track.

2005-11-10 Terror Attacks

There were three attacks in Jordan yesterday and many are outraged. As an al Qaeda groups claims responsibility, the news has been saturated with reports of the carnage, but they have all missed one small detail. The al Qaeda web site says "turned by the dictator of Jordan into a garden for the enemies of our religion, the Jews and the Crusaders". The key word here is “CRUSADERS”, because that’s the way they see us. We invaded an unarmed country, killed tens of thousands, imposed our western values on them and constantly promote Christianity while degrading Islam. This is an image we can’t afford to have, and there isn’t anyone in the Bush administration who is concerned about that image and how to correct it. In fact, they just keep throwing fuel on the fire. Thanks!

2005-11-09 Coat Tails, Finances and Chemical Weapons

It’s the day after Election Day and I’ll sum it up this way. Most candidates who belong to the same party as the president hope to ride on his coat tails to gain some extra votes, but this year it seems the republicans were being dragged down a bumpy road by this president’s coat tails without even knee pads or a helmet.

Speaking of coat tails, check out this little fact and then use the 2nd link below to learn more. Throughout the first 224 years (1776-2000) of our nation's history, 42 U.S. presidents borrowed a combined $1.01 trillion from foreign governments and financial institutions according to the U.S. Treasury Department. In the past four years alone (2001-2005), the Bush Administration has borrowed a staggering $1.05 trillion.

On another front, I recall many speeches and press releases from the Bush administration during the pre Iraq war and early war time periods, reminding us that Saddam used chemical weapons on Iraqi civilians and this demonstrated what a horrible man he was. The 3rd link below is an editorial that refers to an Italian documentary (the 4th link) which demonstrates that it’s the US who now uses chemical weapons on Iraqi civilians. Double standards upset me more than just about anything. If it was bad when Saddam did it, it’s bad when we do it too. It’s also a violation of international law, but laws have never been able to stop or detour the Bush agenda.

2005-11-08 Safe Information Class

In the wake of the Plame leak and Libby indictment, the Bush administration is requiring all its members to take a class in how to deal with sensitive or classified information. When we get a speeding ticket, we have points added to our license and can take a safe driving class to remove some points. This shows that an attempt is being made to learn better habits, but no one has been hurt and no irreparable damage has been done. This is not the case with disclosing national secrets and putting people in harms way. You can’t just take a class and remove those points against you. These people need to be in jail, not in class. NICE TRY mr. president!

2005-11-08 In Local News

The Shinnecock Indian tribe here on Long Island has been getting screwed by the Town of Southampton, New York State and the Federal government for years. They have had trouble getting recognition as a tribe, have been prevented from pursuing economic development projects, any town development projects have been steered away from the areas near the reservation to prevent them from seeing any benefit and have had thousands of acres of land literally stolen from them. Yesterday however, was a good day as they received recognition from a federal judge that opens the door for them to take action on many of these issues. Some time ago, when the town worked to block their development of a casino, my immediate reaction was to suggest that they file papers to reclaim the land the town stole from them 150 years ago. After years of being suppressed by the town, I want them to adopt the attitude that if the town wants to play the legal maneuvering game, let both sides play and level the field. Well, they did just that and filed papers to reclaim their land or be properly compensated for it. With this new ruling there future is looking up. GOOD FOR THEM!

2005-11-07 The Question, The Intelligence and Tribunals

The question is; "If President Bush did not tell the truth about his reasons for going to war with Iraq, Congress should consider holding him accountable through impeachment." and the majority according to a new poll favor impeachment.

On a related issue, newly released documents show that Bush and other members of his administration were told that statements made by an al Qaeda man the US was holding for interrogation were most likely false. The problem is that after learning this, all the Bushies used this false information to help justify going to war anyway.

Also, the Supreme Court has agreed to hear a case involving the right of terror suspects held by the US to get a fair US trial or be subject to a military tribunal. The Bush administration would like to handle all terror issues outside the boundaries of both US and international law. This way, they can just do whatever they want and make up the rules as they go along. This is America, and we are supposed to be better than that.

2005-11-01 The pressure is on in the Senate

In a very rare move the Democrats in the US Senate invoke RULE-21 bringing the senate into closed session. This is a post Libby indictment attempt at forcing republicans to honor their own commitment to investigate pre Iraq war intelligence and the possibility that it was manipulated by the Bush administration. Harry Reid said “I demand on behalf of the America people that we understand why these investigations aren't being conducted”. Since virtually everything that the congress, the U.N. and the public was told by the Bush administration before the war turned out to be false, this is not an inquiry the republicans are anxious to have happen any time soon.

2005-10-31 Distractions, Distractions and Cheney

With the Libby indictments coming out on Friday, we had to endure a Thursday through Monday distraction campaign. Miers steps down (doomed from the start), Bush heads to Camp David (lots of photo ops), Bush speaks about terrorism (again), Rosa Parks transported to Washington to lie in honor in the capitol rotunda (an honor she deserved, but I’m afraid they did it for the wrong reason), Bush nominates a new Supreme Court justice (the one Democrats said they would fight), and with all this going on hopefully we won’t pay much attention to the Libby indictments. He is looking bad enough, now that the US troop death toll in Iraq has hit 2000. There were vigils and protests around the country, including here on Long Island. The group I regularly protest with uses a site in front of Senators Clinton’s and Schumer’s offices. Many are disappointed in these Democrats for not taking a strong enough stand against the president and the war. To that end, one person with us yesterday decided to go into Clinton’s office and refuse to leave, in an effort to get her the press and the public to take notice and hopefully grow some spine. He was removed by police, but it was a peaceful act of civil disobedience that just may get Clinton and others to take notice. On a different subject, the last link below is some interesting reading from the Washington Post about resistance and the constitution vote in Iraq.

2005-10-25 Late confusion ???

On October 24, we had an official confirmed death toll of U.S. soldiers in Iraq of 1998.

The morning of October 25, we have 2 additional confirmed U.S. troop deaths in Iraq.

The total of confirmed U.S. troops dead in Iraq should now be 2000.

On October 25, we are told the official troop death toll in Iraq is now 1999.

How does 1998 + 2 = 1999 , who came back to life and why aren’t others asking this?

(UPDATE - Later the same day)

The media checks the math and begins to announce once again that the death toll has reach 2000.

2005-10-25 Parks, Sheehan, 2000 and Cheney

Wow, the past 24 hours mark a significant and pivotal point in American history. I’ll explain how all the topics listed above are woven into each other and the fabric of our country. Rosa Parks, who was credited with sparking the explosion of the civil rights movement in this country and a symbol of that movement, has died. Parks was a very ordinary woman with an ordinary job who simply refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white man. Why did she refuse? She was tired. The spark that ignites movements of change doesn’t have to come from the wealthy or famous, but almost always comes from these ordinary people who don’t even realize the impact of their actions. Today we have Cindy Sheehan, the mother of a soldier killed in Iraq, who simply went to the presidents “ranch” in Texas to ask why. Her actions have ignited the enthusiasm and drive that now burns within the anti-war movement. Sheehan has vowed that when the 2000th soldier is killed in Iraq, she will go to the Whitehouse, tie herself to the fence and remain there until the troops come home. Well, today is the day, and the 2000th soldier has died in a war that we were lied into. A small group of people manipulated and distorted intelligence to trick the public, congress and other countries into supporting their pet project – WAR. Even worse, they attacked and smeared anyone who publicly opposed their plan, which is the basis of the Plame identity leak case that is now under investigation. So today we also learned that the origin of the leak can be traced all the way to vice president Dick Cheney. Imagine, the vice president involved in an act of treason, simply to protect a pet project. Is this the government I learned to have respect for in school? I think not! Today we all should honor Rosa Parks by taking a stand. Do it with Cindy Sheehan, do it with a local activist group, do it on your own, just find a way that you can take a stand to improve America and prevent the few from destroying and exploiting it from the many.

2005-10-21 Be afraid of Medicaid

Another hurricane is about to hit Florida and millions more may wind up out of work, homeless and without medical coverage. According to the republican congress and George W. Bush, this would be a great time to let the president’s brother and the state of Florida experiment with a new Medicaid scheme which transfers patients to HMOs in order to “save money”. There is quite a debate about the potential success or failure of this scheme, but to me it sounds like a gift from Washington to Jeb Bush (only Florida can implement it) that will be paid for by the affected Medicaid recipients.

2005-10-18 Tamiflu Patent

With fears of the bird flu there have been calls from several governments around the world including the United States for the patent holder of Tamiflu to release the patent which is in force until 2016. Why would the business friendly administration here in the US call for a company to release a patent and risk profits? The answer is simple; the patent holder is a Swiss company, not a US company. In response to this, the manufacturer said they will build a new US plant to increase production and are looking into licensing agreements with other drug manufacturers so they can produce the drug as well. Doesn’t that make more sense than just asking them to give it up for free? They would never ask that of a US company.

2005-10-18 Sheehan Visits

Cindy Sheehan visited us here on Long Island yesterday making two speeches at Nassau Community College. The event was well attended and several local groups participated in setting up “Camp Casey Long Island” just outside the lecture hall. We spoke with many students, faculty and others who came by for the event, handing out flyers, pins, bumper stickers and other literature. There was a special area set aside for “pro-war” protestors, but except for the few people who worked the crowd trying to start arguments with Sheehan supporters, no “pro-war” protestors showed up. You can see a glimpse of “Camp Casey L.I.” below, with literature tables, banners, a makeshift memorial and posters with photos of hundreds of fallen soldiers.

2005-10-18 Iraqi Vote Anomalies

The results of the vote in Iraq will not be announced until officials look into some anomalies they discovered in the vote count. Sometimes the numbers just don’t make sense when you compare them to exit polls or the political make up of a particular population. It is only right to check these results for signs of tampering. That is, unless you are talking about a US election and at my count the 28 election districts in Ohio (which decided the election) that had over 100% voter participation. Read the article linked below about Iraq and then search down on this page for the section that starts “Cuyahoga County OH”. We still have not resolved the questions about the Ohio vote which re-crowned King George.

2005-10-18 The Iraq Group

Rove, Libby, Hughes, Matalin, Wilkinson, Calio, Rice and Hadley

Now that the Grand Jury investigation of the Rove/Plame issue is winding up, it makes a little known news story rise to the surface. Knowledge of the Iraq Group is not widespread among the American public, but everyone should be informed about this. To quickly sum up who and what this was, this was a group of high level Whitehouse insiders who joined together in devising strategies to SELL a war in Iraq to the American public, long before the war and our so called issues with the Iraqi regime.

2005-10-14 Caught in a lie again

                 or Unscripted My Ass

Yesterday as I watched the president’s video conference with the troops in Iraq live, it wasn’t long before I realized I (the viewer) had been lied to. The event, billed as an unscripted, candid discussion with troops on the ground was in fact scripted, totally staged and the most propaganda rich collection of Bush administration dribble I have seen to date. The first clue was right a the beginning when Bush started with a speech designed to reinforce his war effort and the troops on the screen simply were that military backdrop he loves so much. Next, he went to the Q and A with the troops and clue number 2. As he asked each question, the soldier in the center of the group who was the lead person on the Iraq side of the conference, knew immediately who was prepared to answer each question. The troops were carefully screened and chosen to support the administration position and fit the marketing profile the consultants thought would sell the message well to the American public. Now it was only recently (see 2005-10-03) that the G.A.O. completed there investigation on the selling of No Child Left Behind and reinforced the fact that

DOMESTIC PROPAGANDA IS ILLEGAL!

So let’s recap, not only did the Bush administration lie to the media in an effort to get them to cover the event, lie to the public by giving prepared information designed to sell the war rather than actual information about the war, but the also broke the law as they have done so many times in the past.

2005-10-11 Do you remember Katrina?

An earthquake hits near the Pakistan/India border at 8:50am on Saturday October 8th. What does that have to do with hurricane Katrina you ask? Let me continue with our story.

On Saturday at 10:00pm local time or 1:00pm Washington D.C. time (13 hours later)

US President George W Bush offers condolences and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says the US is ready to help. The United States wires an initial $100 000 in aid and dispatches 250 rolls of plastic sheeting, 5 000 blankets, and 5000 water containers, to arrive on Monday.

On Sunday at 7:00pm local time or 10:00am Wash. D.C. time (34 hours later)

The United States sends another $1,000,000.00 in aid.

On Monday at 6:00am local time or 9:00pm Wash. D.C. time (45 hours later)

US relief supplies sent on Saturday begin arriving at air field in Rawalpindi.

On Monday at 2:00pm local time or 5:00am Wash. D.C. time (53 hours later)

US ambassador to Pakistan says the White House authorizes $50m in earthquake aid for Pakistan.

On Monday at 3:00pm local time or 6:00am Wash. D.C. time (54 hours later)

First US helicopters that will help in relief efforts land near Pakistani capital.

On Wednesday at 4:00pm local time or 5:00pm Wash. D.C. time (58 hours after Katrina)

BUSH GIVES FIRST MAJOR ADDRESS ON KATRINA: “Nothing about the president’s demeanor… — which seemed casual to the point of carelessness — suggested that he understood the depth of the current crisis.”

On Thursday at 7:00am local time or 8:00am Wash. D.C. time (73 hours after Katrina)

BUSH CLAIMS NO ONE EXPECTED LEVEES TO BREAK:I don’t think anybody anticipated the breach of the levees.”

On Friday early am local time (more than 90 hours after Katrina)

BUSH WATCHES DVD OF THE WEEK’S NEWSCASTS CREATED BY STAFF WHO THOUGHT BUSH “NEEDED TO SEE THE HORRIFIC REPORTS”: “The reality, say several aides who did not wish to be quoted because it might displease the president, did not really sink in until Thursday night. Some White House staffers were watching the evening news and thought the president needed to see the horrific reports coming out of New Orleans. Counselor Bartlett made up a DVD of the newscasts so Bush could see them in their entirety as he flew down to the Gulf Coast the next morning on Air Force One.”

Compare the 2 timelines using the links below and try to understand why Bush took action to release funds and supplies for the Pakistan earthquake and that aid was arriving in the region, in less time (54 hours) than it took for him to even have any clue what was going on here at home on the Gulf Coast. In fact, he didn’t know what was going on for more than 90 hours. If this “business man” was working for a business instead of the government, he would be fired. This is one time when I agree with those politicians who say we should run government like a business.

2005-10-11 Bush on the Today show

The opening of the Today show this morning was yet another scripted and rehearsed bush photo op. In an effort to rebuild his public support, the president went to Louisiana and appeared in work clothes with Habitat for Humanity on a construction site pretending to be involved in the rebuilding. Why do I say scripted and rehearsed? The opening shot of the show includes the host standing at the construction site with workers behind him holding a framed wall. When he finishes the intro and tells us how Bush is helping with the on site construction, the workers including the president and Laura move the framed wall into place so it can be attached to the structure. All this happens without any camera movement. They walk with the wall from the background right into the camera frame for a perfect photo op shot. There are only two possible explanations for this perfect shot; either the director and camera man are clairvoyant and could predict the shot in advance, or it was rehearsed. My vote goes to the latter.

2005-10-03 Brown, Miers, Baseball, Miller & FEMA

Bush nominates Harriet Miers to be the next Supreme Court justice. The obvious question for me becomes; What do Michael Brown and Harriet Miers have in common? The answer; NO EXPERIENCE. In an effort show the world that he is incapable of learning from his mistakes, George W. Bush is once again trying to elevate a political crony, not because they are appropriate for the job, but because of political loyalty. Miers has never been a judge! Let me try to change the context of this appointment so more people can understand it. My co-worker Tony is very knowledgeable about baseball. He watches baseball constantly, reads about baseball, is familiar with all the rules and his favorite position to play is left field. Tony has never played professional baseball, but after learning about an injury to NY Yankees starting left fielder Tony Womack, George Steinbrenner calls my co-worker Tony, to be the new starting left fielder for the NY Yankees. Wouldn’t it make more sense to look at other available major or minor league players before going to someone with no experience at all. Generally in the case of a judge, their first appointment will be to a local or state court and then they will be slowly promoted through the system as their record of sound decisions earns them respect and possibility a chance for a position on the Supreme Court. What we have in this case is another Michael Brown, a person with no experience being appointed simply because they are a Bush political insider. There is one huge difference in this case however; a Supreme Court appointment is for life.

In an unrelated issue, journalist Judith Miller was released from jail last week and testified before the grand jury in the Valerie Plame case. With story back in the news, I still have never heard or read any clear explanation about why she went to jail in the first place. Most of America and the world just don’t understand it, because it has never been placed in terms the people can understand.

Here goes:

Miller was asked to reveal a source of some information used in an article she wrote. (This article by the way was never published) She claimed, and rightly so, that a reporter does not have to reveal the identity of their sources. This is an important law that has served us well and allowed many whistle-blowers to anonymously alert the public and the authorities about crimes that are being committed. In this case the source revealed the name of an undercover CIA agent, which itself is a crime.

So what’s the difference between a normal protecting a source case and this one?

In the normal case that the law was intended to protect,

the source is leaking information about a crime.

In this case,

     the leak is the crime.

2005-10-03 Did the Bush administration break the law?

The answer is a resounding YES. The GAO has completed their investigation of the Bush administration and the Education department activity of paying broadcasters and public relations firms to promote their agenda and even producing fake news reports designed to do the same. This activity violates a legal ban on “covert propaganda”, but penalties if any are uncertain.

2005-09-29 Arrogance of Power

Today Tim Russert wins the award for speaking out and telling it like it is. Even though Katie Couric of the Today show kept trying to soften Russert’s report and suck up to the republicans, Russert said it and, even said it again; Rove, Frist, Abramoff, Delay, Iraq, Katrina, it is ARROGANCE OF POWER. This is a bold and long overdue statement by a major news personality. There is no transcript yet , so no link. In a somewhat related story, today we are expecting a vote on the Roberts Supreme Court nomination. What is unusual about today’s vote however is that we are told the vice president will preside, something he should do but doesn’t always do, and the vote will be by voice roll call. What does this mean? Each member’s name is called and they must stand up one at a time and say “yea” or “nay”. This is very unusual, because these days voice votes are usually done as a group and individually recorded votes are usually done electronically. Why is this a related story? Let’s go back to the idea of “arrogance of power”. The attitude of the Bush administration has always been, either you’re for us, or you’re against us. With this attitude and the underlying tone of “arrogance of power” they want anyone who opposes the bush nomination to have to stand up and publicly state it. This puts pressure on any republican who may want to oppose Roberts, because they know that this public statement will open them up to attacks by their own party. When food is scarce, rats will even eat each other. Hopefully this will backfire.

2005-09-27 Amazing but True?

FEMA has hired a consultant to evaluate the agency’s response to hurricane Katrina. It would be very useful to study the response and learn what worked and what didn’t so the agency can do better in the future. A good idea however always seems to turn into a bad idea in the hands of the Bush administration and in this case the turn comes when we find out who they have hired for this position. Michael Brown, that’s right, Michael Brown, the man responsible for the awful FEMA response to the hurricane has been hired to evaluate himself. I don’t think we will learn much from THIS report.

2005-09-26 All Hurricane, All the Time

President Bush should send out a big thank you to the press for their coverage of “all hurricane, all the time” this past weekend. By devoting 100% of their efforts to the hurricane, they were able to keep news of the anti-war rally out of most American homes. This was the largest anti-war rally since Vietnam and many don’t even know it happened. I will not avoid it, and below you will find photos and links. The other interesting development related to this rally was a disruption of Amtrak service between NY and DC on Saturday morning. Officially this was due to a crane dropping a beam on train power lines and many would be DC protesters never made it to the rally site. This story didn’t seem too interesting until I remembered my own DC trip to protest on inauguration day. Early that January morning an Amtrak train derailed just outside DC stopping all Amtrak trains from entering the city. Crews worked hard all day and miraculously were able to restore service just after the inaugural parade ended. Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not.

Since all the coverage was about the hurricanes, I will give in and spend a moment to comment. The president made many appearances, attempting to look in control or at least concerned throughout the weekend. The press fell right in line giving him huge amounts of “face time” and reminding us how well prepared all the agencies were after the lessons learned after Katrina. The one striking difference I noticed was that on all the news channels, the mostly white middle class people fleeing the path of hurricane Rita were “evacuees” as opposed to the poor black “refugees” that fled Katrina. Also, in a late development getting a quick mention on the Monday morning news, Bush may recommend that the military be placed in charge of all future disaster relief efforts. This could eliminate FEMA entirely and run these function from the Pentagon. This idea coming after the hurricanes, just like the patriot act and the initiation of Bush Middle East war operations coming after 9-11, is another attempt at using an event to justify an action they wanted anyway. The “Project for a New American Century” (http://www.newamericancentury.org/ ), the people who are actually running this country right now, have an agenda to build the strength and importance of the military by using any available justification and then using that increased power to take over the world. If this sounds crazy and far fetched, I will repeat what I said several years ago; ‘The more you learn about this group, the more frightened you will become.”

2005-09-20 Sheehan Cut Short

Cindy Sheehan’s speech in Union Square NY was cut short by police and an event organizer arrested because they say there was no permit for a sound system. The news stories all focus on crowd reaction, police action and even draw a comparison to the arrests of demonstrators during the RNC. All the reports seem to be missing what might be a bigger story. One account of the story had this quote; The announcer said they sought a permit for weeks with no response from the city government. Is this the new challenge to free speech in America? If a group with an opposing view tries to get a permit for an event, instead of denying the permit and being accused of blocking free speech, just don’t respond at all and hope the event date passes with no one noticing the government avoidance. How many times can they get away with that?

2005-09-16 Bush takes the blame again

In a strangely staged speech from New Orleans where there is no audience, yet Bush doesn’t look into the camera, but instead plays to some phantom audience he says; “I as president am responsible for the problem (long pause) and for the solution.” This may be the first true statement he has uttered in years. I guess that half baked I take responsibility statement he made a few days ago tested well in all the focus groups, so he makes this one with more confidence and clarity hoping to get some political mileage out of it. Bush is sure to also include catching sounding phrases like, Armies of Compassion, Gulf Opportunity Zone, Worker Recovery Accounts and Urban Homesteading Act along with references to both 9-11 and God. I had some trouble listening to him say “the system was overwhelmed in the first few days” when in truth, the system was not overwhelmed but wasn’t functioning at all. Next was “I consider detailed emergency planning to be a National Security priority.” I thought that after 9-11 and with the creation of the Department of Homeland Security, emergency planning for any type of emergency (natural or human initiated) was already a priority and he was the man who would keep us safe. Katrina proves that even with warning, the security he boasted in an effort to get re-elected failed. Imagine if it were a terrorist event with no warning. And finally; “one of the largest reconstruction efforts the world has ever seen.” With the highest deficit and debt in history, tax cuts and the continues cost of his mess in Iraq, how are we going to pay for the? Magic money?

2005-09-14 Bush takes responsibility?

Yesterday, in an effort to move the topic from Katrina back to Iraq where Bush polls only slightly better, Dubya holds a press conference along side the president of Iraq. They both spend quite a bit of time telling us and each other how great everything is going in Iraq and what a good job each is doing in the fight for democracy. They say we are making great progress fighting these terrorist groups who want to disrupt democracy and the president of Iraq does his best to support the Bush idea of no troop withdrawal time table. His comments are perfectly scripted to be exactly what the Bush administration wants us to hear so he can keep his poll numbers up and maintain power here in Stepford. Perhaps in response to this dribble, hours later the resistance in Iraq launches the largest wave of bombings to date, killing and injuring many and reminding us to remove our rose colored glasses. When they move to questions, the topic immediately shifts back to Katrina. “Katrina exposed serious problems in our response capability at all levels of government and to the extent that the federal government didn’t fully do its job right I take responsibility.” The hesitations in this statement make it seem like an apology by a young child who is forced by his mother (Karl Rove) to apologize and the statements have been well rehearsed, but his lack of desire to actually say it makes it hard for the words to flow. Taking responsibility is something Bush may have never done before in his life, so it is uncomfortable and he immediately shifts the emphasis to telling us what a great job these rescuers from the Coast Guard and other groups are doing. (By the way, did you know that New York was a United States ally? Listen carefully as the president attempts to name an ally and names New York.)

2005-09-12 Does Bush know what’s going on?

My favorite news story of the day is one that includes a tale of Bush aides recording the network news on DVD to show the president and then discussing which one of them would use it to break the bad news that things weren’t going well. Maybe it’s me, but I would hope that my president would be less detached and already have some idea what’s going on. The article is linked below.

I usually don’t include photos that have been altered,

but this one (a composite of 2 photos) goes a long way

to displaying the response and attitude of the president.

The question as always is;

What will it take for Bush supporters to realize how much of a screw up this man is,

how many laws he has broken and how much damage he has done to our country?

2005-09-09 Keep the profits coming

After a slow response on hurricane relief, the Bush administration has been quick with contracts and legal maneuvers. Yes, the rebuilding contracts are being passed out to companies like Halliburton (SURPRISE) and to insure extra profit, he adds an exemption to the “prevailing wage” law for contractors involved in reconstruction. (UPDATE 2005-10-27 – Under pressure, Bush reverses his “prevailing wage” exemption decision.)

2005-09-06 Recess Appointment, Errors, Insensitivity,

Relief, Real Help and a Nomination

Wow, what a list. Bush left Crawford ahead of schedule, not to get relief to victims, but since congress was to go back in session ahead of schedule to vote on relief funds, he had to get there first to sneak in another recess appointment. This time it was Alice Fisher, who was held up by the Gitmo abuse scandal. We add to this insult by adding reports of FEMA actually turning help away. Water, fuel, boats and more were turned away by FEMA officials immediately after the hurricane hit. I guess if Bush was playing golf, Cheney was on vacation in an undisclosed location and Condi was seeing a Broadway show and shoe shopping in NY, they didn’t need any of those items for their activities. After getting back on the job, the haves showed great insensitivity to the have-nots. Dubya’s insensitivity (below in 2005-09-02 re: Trent Lott) was eclipsed only by his mother who speaking about relocated survivors in the Astrodome said "And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this is working very well for them." Amid all this bad news, relief finally starts to arrive this weekend. In a quote from a NY Times article linked below, this may be why; In a clear slap at Mr. Chertoff and the FEMA director, Michael D. Brown, Governor Blanco announced Saturday that she had hired James Lee Witt, the director of FEMA during the Clinton administration, to advise her on the recovery. And finally, after the death of Chief Justice Rehnquist this weekend Bush decides that Roberts, who he nominated to replace O’Connor should now replace Rehnquist as Chief Justice. It always makes sense to me to bypass all the existing members of the court and nominate a young judge with no experience on the court to the position of Chief Justice. NOT!

2005-09-05 Picking up the slack for FEMA

It is wonderful to see businesses, charities, private individuals and others picking up the slack to make up for the inadequacy of FEMA. The best example over the weekend was the MDA Jerry Lewis Telethon. This was an already scheduled unrelated annual event, where they chose to alter their appeal to include hurricane relief by including information on how to donate to the Red Cross and the Salvation Army. In the competition for charity fund raising dollars, it is unprecedented for one charity organization to make an appeal on behalf of another charity organization. Good for them! We thank them for their sensitivity and courage to risk breaking the mold. In my own part of the world here in NY, Labor Day marks the end of the main part of the boating season and each year we have a dock party at the marina where I live. This year the party was also converted into a fund raising event. We didn’t reschedule or re-plan, we simply made it a dual purpose event by making an appeal to the guests, playing zydeco music to remind us of those on the Gulf coast and hanging up a donation jar. (The jar is visible on the left side of the first photo below.) The jar was not very large, but I can tell you, the donations added could NOT be classified as small change. The effort was a success.

2005-09-02 More on FEMA efforts

The Coast Guard and other local agencies and individuals have been giving 110% in doing a fantastic job saving lives and helping victims. This however is in contrast to the poor response and lack of coordination by FEMA and other federal agencies and officials. The locals and individual Coast Guard teams can’t do it all and those in the federal government who should take charge, just aren’t doing it. In another “photo op” press conference by the president he said that we will rebuild Trent Lott’s house and he is looking forward to sitting on the porch with him. This should be little comfort to anyone who isn’t a wealthy white government official who is friends with the president. Nothing can sum up the problems with the rescue effort better than an interview with New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin. Use the link to hear the interview from the AirAmerica web site.

     Nagin Interview

2001-09-01 FEMA response to Katrina

"This is a national disgrace. FEMA has been here three days, yet there is no command and control," said Terry Ebbert, head of New Orleans' emergency operations. "We can send massive amounts of aid to tsunami victims but we can't bail out the city of New Orleans. We have got a mayor who has been pushing and asking but we're not getting supplies."

FEMA was a trusted and respected federal agency, but not anymore!

2001-09-01 NH Union Leader

Below is what one newspaper that endorsed Bush in the last 2 elections had to say about his reaction to Katrina.

Bush and Katrina:
A time for action, not aloofness

AS THE EXTENT of Hurricane Katrina’s devastation became clearer on Tuesday — millions without power, tens of thousands homeless, a death toll unknowable because rescue crews can’t reach some regions — President Bush carried on with his plans to speak in San Diego, as if nothing important had happened the day before.

Katrina already is measured as one of the worst storms in American history. And yet, President Bush decided that his plans to commemorate the 60th anniversary of VJ Day with a speech were more pressing than responding to the carnage.

A better leader would have flown straight to the disaster zone and announced the immediate mobilization of every available resource to rescue the stranded, find and bury the dead, and keep the survivors fed, clothed, sheltered and free of disease.

The cool, confident, intuitive leadership Bush exhibited in his first term, particularly in the months immediately following Sept. 11, 2001, has vanished. In its place is a diffident detachment unsuitable for the leader of a nation facing war, natural disaster and economic uncertainty.

Wherever the old George W. Bush went, we sure wish we had him back.

2001-08-31 Unprepared for Hurricane Katrina

The hurricane could not be avoided, but could we be better prepared? YES! New Orleans is destroyed and the people homeless and once again some of the blame goes to the Bush administration, tax cuts and the Iraq war. Federal money was diverted from preparedness projects in New Orleans to tax cuts and the Iraq war. Many saw it coming, many shouted warnings, and the federal government turned a deaf ear. It would have still been a bad situation for the city, but the actions of the Bush administration made a bad situation worse. The link below gives some insight into the situation and I chose this one because it has other links to and quotes from older related articles.

For now, all you can do is help any way you can. Donate $ to the Red Cross, donate equipment or services that may be needed, take in a displaced person or family (you may even know someone there), or any other action that is helpful and is right for you.

Protesters carry banners and a poster of the former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein as they rally against the new constitution, in Baqouba, 60 kilometers (35 miles) northeast of Baghdad, Friday, Aug. 26, 2005. In the predominantly Sunni city of Baqouba, about 5,000 people rallied to protest against the proposed charter. Demonstrators carried photos of Saddam Hussein _ the first time they have been seen in public since the former dictator was arrested in December 2003.

Believe it or not, this photo was taken on August 26th, 2005 as Sunni protesters against the new Iraq constitution let the world know how they feel about the new government as compared to the old one. The Sunnis are getting the getting the shaft every step of the way under the new government.

2005-08-26 Lieberman mystery solved

For some time now, many have wondered how Senator Joe Lieberman has transformed from the democratic vice-presidential candidate into a man who seems to be the most republican democrat in congress. He has either laid low or embraced much of the republican agenda for some time, and even when he feels he must speak out, the challenge is very reserved. Now with the latest military base closing announcements, the mystery is solved. The Groton CT submarine base which many thought would be shut down has been spared and Lieberman comes off looking like a Connecticut hero. In the news clips of Lieberman watching the announcements on TV, he gave an academy award winning performance jumping for joy and hugging everyone around him while looking surprised. Yes, Washington is all about political power and making deals and that includes both democrats and republicans. My pages focus on the Bush administration only because they have raised the bar and elevated back room deals, political lies, dirty tricks and corruption to a whole new level, but they don’t have an exclusive on these techniques.

2005-08-23 Thou shalt not kill

“We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come to exercise that ability” is what Pat Robertson said suggesting that the leader of Venezuela should be killed. Robertson also says that Venezuela is becoming a launching pad for communism and Islamic extremism. It seems ironic that a religious leader, who follows the 10 commandments, should call for action that directly contradicts one of these basic laws. It seems ironic until you consider that he represents that portion of the religious right that supports the Bush administration policies with unconditional devotion and will do or say anything to promote the NeoCon agenda. Is it a coincidence that Venezuela is the only South American member of OPEC and a major supplier of OIL to the US? Is the agenda to stick our political nose in every country that supplies us with OIL, but just do it one at a time so most people won’t make the connection? What kind of religious leader calls for the death of another human being? Is this the middle ages? It reminds me of another great mystery, the pro-life, pro-war movement. People get killed in war, so how is that pro-life? Is this the moral high ground? I THINK NOT, and the only explanation is either that these people are confused about their beliefs, or they are using religion as a political tool. One is sad and the other is deceptive and criminal.

Internet jokes are not my thing, but I like this one

How many members of the Bush Administration are needed to change a light bulb?
           The Answer is TEN:
     1.
One to deny that a light bulb needs to be changed,
     2. One to attack the patriotism of anyone who says the light bulb needs to be changed,
     3. One to blame Clinton for burning out the light bulb,
     4. One to tell the nations of the world that they are either for changing the light bulb or for darkness,
     5. One to give a billion-dollar no-bid contract to Halliburton for the new light bulb,
     6. One to arrange a photograph of Bush, dressed as a janitor, standing on a stepladder under the banner

         "Light Bulb Change Accomplished,"
     7. One administration insider to resign and write a book  documenting in detail how Bush was literally "in the dark,"
     8. One to viciously smear #7,
     9. One surrogate to campaign on TV and at rallies on how  George Bush has had a strong light-bulb-changing policy all along.

           and finally:

     10. One to confuse Americans about the difference between screwing a light bulb and screwing the country.

2005-08-23 Yet another new reason

In a speech to the VFW convention in Utah Bush offers his latest excuse to support the war in Iraq. We must fight to honor those who have already died in the fight. He said, “We owe them something. We will finish the task that they gave their lives for. We will honor their sacrifice by staying on the offensive against the terrorists”. This would be like your investment counselor saying, “Well, we poured a lot on money into this company with a bad product and no sales, so now we should continue investing in them to honor the losses we have already incurred.” Most people would be smart enough to find a new investment counselor. NOW, we need most Americans to be smart enough to find a new president.

2005-08-10 Bush Iraq poll numbers are down

As the approval numbers for how Bush is handling Iraq are plunging and the media wants to spin and analyze all the possible reasons for the drop, I’ll sum it up this way;

If I had the opportunity to ask the president a question about Iraq at a Whitehouse press conference, here is the question I would ask.

Mr. President, we have been told many things about Iraq either directly by you or by other members of your administration such as,

Iraq has weapons of mass destruction,

We know where the weapons are,

They are developing a nuclear weapons program,

They purchased enriched uranium from Africa,

There are chemical belts around Baghdad,

Saddam has stockpiles of chemical weapons,

Our troops will be greeted with flowers and chocolates,

Major combat operations have ended,

The sale of Iraqi oil will pay for the reconstruction,

The situation will improve after the hand over of power,

The situation will improve after the elections,

We are in the last stages of the insurgency,

We have captured 75% of al Qaeda,

We have captured the number 3 man in al Qaeda (several times),

The troops are properly equipped,

The prisoner torture is not wide spread, but an isolated event,

and many, many other similar statements,

Mr. President, is there anything you can tell us about Iraq that is actually true?

2005-08-10 Bush poll numbers on the economy are down

The approval numbers for how Bush is handling the economy are plunging and the media wants to spin and analyze all the possible reasons for the drop. Some say the drop makes no sense because the economy is up and the drop must be due to spill over from the war disapproval. Yes, it is true that the economy is up. Large corporations, especially military contractors and energy companies are experiencing enormous growth which helps to sway the numbers in the president’s favor. The average American worker however, is seeing little or no growth in wages and higher energy costs, so the booming military contracting and energy market does nothing for their personal economic situation. I don’t think most Americans get a warm fuzzy feeling when they hear how much money a large corporation is making while they watch their financial situation deteriorate. The media needs to wake up and understand the one statistic doesn’t tell the whole story.

2005-08-03 Depraved Indifference

The charge is DEPRAVED INDIFFERENCE. The President, Vice-President, S of D and others in the Bush administration act without any concern for human life. In Iraq, Gitmo, the Plame case and others, they use troops, civilians, government agents, money, weapons and more as tools in a game where they don’t care about or understand the consequences. In this case the consequence is many human lives and the charge is DEPRAVED INDIFFERENCE. If Bush, Cheney, or others had actually served in combat, they might understand that this is not a game. There are many in public offices who understand how serious war is, even without the experience of combat service, but there doesn’t appear to be anyone in the Bush administration with that understanding.

2005-08-02 False Intelligence? Imagine that!

A former CIA agent demands an investigation about why he was pressured to falsify intelligence and later fired for not doing it. His 2001 report said no Iraqi WMDs or development programs, but this didn’t fit with the Bush plan so it was unacceptable. How many whistle blowers do we need? How much evidence do we need? There seems to be huge numbers of Americans who will defend Bush and his administration regardless of the facts. It has been my opinion for some time now that these FoxNews watchers won’t even begin to ask questions until they see Bush himself led away in handcuffs. For now they will simply believe anything Bush or any member of his administration says no matter how ridiculous it is or how mush evidence we have to the contrary. We are becoming a nation of lemmings, mindlessly following along and incapable of independent thought.

2005-08-01 Bush appoints Bolton

After 5 months of hold up in the Senate, Bush appoints Bolton as Ambassador to the UN without Senate approval using the rare recess appointment loophole. Bush made no attempt to comply with Senate requests for additional documentation, no attempt to understand why there were concerns about Bolton, and never addressed any possible connection between Bolton and the Wilson/Plame/Rove/Libby investigation and why Bolton lied under oath during his confirmation hearings about being called to testify. Exhibiting his continued arrogance, Bush like with his other appointments approached this one with his typical “My Way or the Highway” attitude. Bolton may be involved in the Plame case and he doesn’t even like the UN, but under the Bush Whitehouse there shall be no questions, no discussion, no requests for more information or any other attempts to question or even understand an administration decision. They want the House, Senate, courts, media and the public to obey every command without question or dissent. This doesn’t sound like democracy to me.

Remember this quote by W,

“If this were a dictatorship, it'd be a heck of a lot easier, just so long as I'm the dictator.”

Even a shallow pop diva can learn a hard lesson about media manipulation and propaganda. After a trip to Iraq to shoot a TV show with the troops, Simpson was very disturbed by the conditions on the ground. What she found even more disturbing however is when she returned to the US and wanted to share her experiences, SURPRISE, SURPRISE, SURPRISE, all the video of graphic and frightening war images was missing and only the fluff survived.

2005-07-25 Is the A-F-L-C-I-O splitting up?

It looks like the 25 year old GOP campaign to break up labor unions may be starting to pay off. It started with Reagan and included the replacement of every air traffic controller when their union walked out, but now the long time pressure is causing problems from within. The individual unions in the A-F-L-C-I-O are fighting over plans for the future and how they want to be represented. This has been building for years within smaller unions with the Bush administration offering 100% of their support for big business and 0% for workers. Union members should fight the temptation to fight within, and find new ways to come together, get bigger, stronger and gain new strength.

2005-07-21 From the Boise Weekly

I don’t usually reprint complete articles, but this one I couldn’t resist.

Treasongate: It's Not Just Karl Rove
National security compromised by White House
BY TED RALL

NEW YORK-Since Karl Rove surfaced last week as the White House official who probably unmasked a covert CIA agent, new developments appear to confirm that the deputy chief of staff and chief Bush political strategist has committed treason:

Newsweek has published, and Time has authenticated, a Time reporter's notes about his crucial conversation with Rove. "Spoke to Rove on double super secret background for about two [minutes] before he went on vacation," Matt Coopers' notes read. Rove told Cooper that "[former ambassador and Iraq war critic] Joe Wilson's wife ... apparently works at the [Central Intelligence] Agency on WMD issues."

In the past, Bush Administration officials have repeatedly denied that Rove was involved and promised to fire whomever outted Plame. Now, rather than proclaim his innocence, Bush and his PR flacks are stonewalling. "This is a question relating to an ongoing investigation," his press secretary repeats to an increasing torrent of journalists' pointed questions.

Denizens of official Washington invariably issue a powerful, categorical denial-sometimes accompanied by the threat of libel litigation-whenever an allegation is untrue. Rove's silence on Treasongate can't convict him in a court of law. That comes later. Still, it speaks volumes.

Imagine, for a few paragraphs, that you are the U.S. director of Central Intelligence. Rove's seditious behavior requires you to wonder about the possible extent of his inside job against U.S. national security. Did Rove act alone? Probably not. His Plame operation, no doubt conceived in league with Dick Cheney and other high-ranking scoundrels, may merely represent the tip of a huge iceberg of duplicity. How else did "Bush's brain" subvert our intelligence community? Are Rove's intimates, who include Bush himself, running interference for him out of personal loyalty, or are they trying to cover up their own treasonous acts? Someone at Langley provided highly classified personnel information to Rove, a dirty tricks specialist and pollster. Who?

In 1985, CIA traitor Aldrich Ames sold the KGB the names of every U.S. spy in the Soviet Union in return for $2 million. Arrests and executions soon wiped out America's human assets in the Soviet Union. As they were caught unprepared by one shocker after another-glasnost, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the implosion of the USSR-intelligence professionals suspected a well-placed mole as the culprit. But Ames wasn't caught for another nine years.

Karl Rove, on the other hand, has already been found out as a likely traitor to the United States. Now we must work backwards. Does his exposure help to explain some of the administration's most baffling foreign policy blunders?

No matter how remote, we must now consider the possibility that Karl Rove may in the employ of, and/or receiving money from, a terrorist organization such as Al Qaeda. Alternatively, could he be in the employ of a hostile foreign government? If he betrayed a CIA agent, Rove is a traitor and therefore capable of anything. Only an exhaustive investigation of his and his associates' anti-American activities, up to and including those committed by George W. Bush, can resolve these questions.

Internal sabotage offers a tempting explanation for the fact that so much has gone wrong for the United States since 2001. After 9/11, Osama bin Laden was in Pakistan-which had financed the Taliban and trained the hijackers at its camps-but Bush shocked analysts by attacking Afghanistan and Iraq instead. Was Bush's refusal to search for bin Laden in his nation of residence the result of spectacular incompetence-or a continuing alliance with the same Islamists his father's presidency had armed and funded? Are we losing the wars against Afghanistan and Iraq because of Rumsfeld's stubborn insistence on understaffing the military? Or are our leaders intentionally dragging out combat to accomplish their masters' aims: increasing the popularity of radical Islam and the recruitment of terrorists? Even Bush's domestic policies, from tax cuts paid to the rich people least likely to stimulate the economy to his attack on Social Security, seem designed to undermine U.S. stability and prosperity. Was Bush crossing his fingers when he swore to preserve and defend the constitution?

Maybe. Maybe not. The point is: we don't know. But we must find out.

National security is bipartisan. Democrats and Republicans may be divided over various ideological conflicts, but all patriotic Americans should be able to agree on a zero-tolerance policy for treason. Rove, those who worked with him and anyone who protected him must go.

2005-07-20 Roberts, Rove, Plame, Memos & Crime

Bush nominates Roberts to the Supreme Court and the usual praise, opposition and spin will follow. This however is not the big reason for getting this nomination out so quickly as anyone who follows the news will have noticed, the nomination announcement has immediately made the Rove/Plame story drop off the radar. For the Bush administration, any distraction from the Rove scandal is welcome. I will continue to follow the Rove story as I have done for two years, so it will not disappear from this page. Below is a good link that gives the time line of the case that includes Bush presenting false information to congress and the public during the State of the Union address (a crime), the Rove disclosure, the Air Force One memo and more. When asked about the Rove/Plame investigation on July 19th Bush said, “if someone committed a crime, they will no longer work in my administration”. The irony in this statement is that Bush himself has a criminal record, as does Cheney and a long list of other administration members who were involved in scandals and illegal activity under prior administrations, like the Iran Contra scandal, and were later pardoned. Do the research.

2005-07-18 Are we tracking terrorists?

Well, the answer is yes, but it appears that we are not spending as much time on it as the president would like us to believe. According to some reports, the FBI is diverting some terrorist research time and using those resources to track and investigate “liberal” domestic groups that may pose a political threat to the Bush administration. You know, those terrorist groups like the ACLU that may do something radical, like legal action to protect the Bill of Rights. Remember, under the Bush/Rove administration, it’s not about national security, fiscal responsibility, or human rights, but it’s all about politics. Holding on to and gaining more political power is all that matters to them.

2005-07-14 Anybody but Rove

After the news surfaced that Rove was involved in leaking the identity of CIA agent Valerie Plame, the republicans have started an all out attack on anybody but Rove. In the latest talking points, it’s Joe Wilson’s fault, Plame’s fault, the media’s fault or anyone else they can think of, in fact some are even suggesting that Rove is a hero for committing this otherwise treasonous act. Talk about the ultimate spin!

David Gregory of NBC news wins the Balls of Helen Thomas award for persistence and journalistic integrity for his performance at the July 11th, 2005 Whitehouse press conference by Scott McClellan. Gregory pressed for answers about the Valerie Plame investigation and Rove’s involvement. He stayed on point, he persisted and he did not allow McClellan who along with Bush have commented on the matter in the past, to dismiss his questions and change their press policy now that Rove is implicated. Gregory also inspired other reporters to continue the line of questioning, presenting a unified press demanding answers. This is something we haven’t seen since the beginning of the Bush administration. Thank you David

2005-07-07 Trouble in London

There were multiple explosions in London this morning killing and wounding people during the morning rush hour. The early news reports and commentary all jumped to the same conclusion, that this was designed to interrupt the G8 summit on its opening day. The disruption of the summit makes quite a statement, but all the hype of it by the both the press and the G8 leaders, serves only to self promote the importance of the G8 countries and leadership. These powerful nations are like the diva on stage, believing the world revolves around them and immediately relate any event to their own self importance. The media plays right along and only makes the situation worse. I believe the terrorists involved may have been prepared to strike in any of the cities that were nominated to host 2012 Olympics and allowed the Olympic committee to choose the location of the attack with the announcement of their final choice (London). This would not be a direct attack on the Olympics or the G8 meeting itself, but one designed for maximum public psychological impact. With the celebration of London getting the Olympic games and the G8 meeting beginning, the terrorists seem to want these leaders to know that they are not as in control as they think they are. I believe that if NY or Paris were selected, they would have attacked there, simply to let us know that they could attack anywhere and there is little these self promoting so called great world leaders could do about it. You decide. The attack was quickly followed by Blair and Bush making public statements about preserving our way of life and condemning these attacks which killed innocent civilians. The question then becomes; when we attacked Iraq, didn’t we disrupt their way of life and kill innocent civilians?

2005-07-05 Did Rove commit treason?

The leaking of the identity of covert CIA agent Valerie Plame is back in the news and the fingers seem to be pointing at Karl Rove. Could Bush’s right hand man be guilty of treason and have leaked the name as political punishment to Joe Wilson for simply telling the truth? We all know Rove will stop at nothing for political gain and is the undisputed king of political dirty tricks. Remember, he is the one who bugged his own office and tried to say his opponents planted it.

2005-07-04 How did all these fireworks get here?

Well it’s 4th of July and there are fireworks shooting into the sky from every neighborhood on Long Island. Yes, that’s Long Island NY and if you were sending a truck or car full of fireworks to this area (only Grucci specialty fireworks are made here) it would pass through the City of NY on the way. Don’t we have new security measures, truck inspections, explosive detectors and other measures that would prevent all these explosives from entering NYC? How did they all get here? I’m not talking about a few fire crackers and bottle rockets in a car, I’m talking about huge quantities of every possible type of pyrotechnic display. What’s going on here?

2005-07-01 Is it the same man?

Today                Unknown                Late 70’s

The Bush administration is not happy about the results of the election in Iran, so a little controversy would be a good thing to them. All I can say after a quick study of the 3 pictures above is, it’s not him. The new & old photos of the president elect are on the left and right, with the unknown hostage taker in the middle. There is a shadow in the unknown photo so you have to look close, but the bottom line is, facial hair unlike hair on the top of the head always gets thicker as a man grows older, not thinner. Does this look like the normal progression of a man’s beard development? I think not.

2005-07-01 Subliminal Messages?

Is there a subliminal message in the backdrop of the president’s speech the other night? Is seems like they spent an awful lot of time and effort to produce a backdrop where every flag is incomplete. In fact, every flag is the exact same flag.

You decide

2005-06-29 Until the Mission is Accomplished

Last night the president addressed the nation, not from the Oval Office, but in front of a military audience at Fort Bragg. With falling poll numbers, the seven Downing Street documents and more people beginning to speak out against the war, he tried to shore up support for continued military action in Iraq. He said; “Our mission in Iraq is clear.” and “We will stay in Iraq as long as we are needed, and not a day longer.” and “…we will stay in the fight until the fight is won”. Our stated mission has changed several times since the Iraq war started so it’s not very clear at all. I also recall the image below, which received total media saturation and was designed to give the public an impression that we had won, and only minor clean up operations are be left to do, when in fact there have been more attacks and more deaths after the staging of this image than before.

Photo from http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/909566/posts

The president also tried 5 times to link the war in Iraq with September 11th. Yes there are Al Qaeda fighters and other terrorists in Iraq now, because we attracted them and increased their recruiting as a response to our unprovoked attack on Iraq. At the time of the September 11th attack on the US, Iraq was not a threat to the United States and had no weapons of mass destruction or connection to any terrorist organizations as the Bush administration would have you believe. The violence, terrorist activity, “sources of instability” and “ruthless killers” that exists in Iraq today, WE CREATED OR ATTRACTED! This mess is our fault. Our new mission is to “prevent al Qaeda and other foreign terrorists from turning Iraq into what Afghanistan was under the Taliban” and remember, terrorists want to attack our country and kill our citizens, and Iraq is where they are making their stand.”  This wasn’t happening until we invaded Iraq.

Now some flat out lies;

“They failed to break our Coalition”

Yes they did break the Coalition.

“Today Iraq has more than 160,000 security forces trained and equipped”

Who is he kidding? Just because he says we are training or building up or equipping Iraqi security forces or army or police and mixes up these words in as many combinations as possible so he can say it over and over and over again, doesn’t make it true.

And who did the president make a point of quoting in his speech? Osama Bin Laden.

Jimmy Breslin expressed what many are feeling just the other day;

"We just lost three women in Fallujah,… Bush says we're gonna carry on. Fine. I say, `You got two daughters. Send them over there to replace them!' "

2005-06-24 How many troops have died?

A story is beginning to surface that the number of troop deaths due to the war in Iraq is being manipulated. It’s a question of semantics when the government releases the figures on how many troops have “died in Iraq”. The figures are accurate, but the key words are IN IRAQ. Apparently, if a soldier is wounded in Iraq and is transported to a hospital outside Iraq, only to die of those injuries at the new location, that soldier is not part of the official body count. Yes the wounds were inflicted in Iraq, because of the ongoing conflict there, but the place of death may be a hospital in Germany so the administration chooses not to include this causality in that official count. This is a deliberate effort to spin the numbers for political gain and every American should be outraged. Demand answers.

2005-06-24 Bush a uniter, not a divider?

It seems after comments by Rove and no retraction by the Whitehouse, the last thing Bush wants to do is unite this nation. It looks more like an attempt to widen the divide in an effort to shore up political power in the wake of falling poll numbers. Remember, whatever the Bush administration says, the truth is the exact opposite.

2005-06-17 Glen’s letter to the Today Show

The producers, hosts and others involved with the Today show should be embarrassed to call it a “news show”. Once again you have dropped the ball in either an effort to avoid upsetting the status quo or a flat out media gift to the Bush administration. On the morning after John Conyers held a forum to discuss the “Downing Street Memo”, after 6 other similar documents have come out of the UK, when a letter is hand delivered to the White House signed by 120 members of congress and 560,000 members of the public asking the president to respond to the content of these documents, when none of the 7 documents have ever had their authenticity questioned, when these documents make it clear that the Bush administration lied us into war, YOU HAD NO MENTION OF THIS STORY AND IN FACT THE BIGGEST STORY OF THE DAY WAS TOM CRUISE GETTING ENGAGED. Over 1700 US troops and over 100,000 Iraqis have died because the president, vice president, secretary of defense, secretary of state, national security advisor and others conspired to lie us into war. THIS IS A CRIME AND THIS IS NEWS! After years of media saturation about the big Clinton lie which involved a personal indiscretion where no one was physically hurt, the media seems to think that lying people to death as Bush has done is OK. I have lost count of the number of laws this administration has broken and yet they still get a free ride. Tom Cruise should not be your big story of the day. The last time I wrote was on Jan. 7 of this year, because on Jan 6 there was a challenge and debate regarding the electoral vote. This is very unusual and seemed newsworthy, but your big political story the following morning was, “The president got a new dog”. What happened to the news? Why won’t you report it?

Words Before the Invasion

2005-06-15 MORE PROOF!!!

The Downing Street memo has been out for some time with not one challenge to its authenticity. Now 6 other “secret” documents have surfaced with additional evidence that the Bush administration intentionally deceived the American public, Congress, the UN and the world in his effort to launch a war on Iraq. In one case it indicates that while he was telling us we would not go to war except as a last resort, the war had already started. NONE of there documents have had their authenticity challenged. Below is a link to an article that has links to the text of each document. The surprise here is not that the documents exist or their contents, but the fact that the US media seems uninterested in this information and the TRUTH.

2005-06-08 Smokin’ Gun and no one saw it

Bush and Blair hold a joint press conference and someone actually asks a question about the Downing Street memo. Now that they have had about a month to formulate a response Blair says, they couldn’t have made the decision to go to war as the memo suggests, because they hadn’t even been to the UN yet. Isn’t the fact that the memo suggests this before any resolutions in Congress, the House of Commons or the UN, the whole point!!! Then in another example of one of those Bush media miracles, none of the major news networks cover the press conference, or the Downing Street memo story on the following day’s morning news, because we captured an Al-Qaeda suspect. Each time there is a story that may make Bush look bad, we have a terror alert, capture a suspect or have some other event that makes the story just fall through the cracks. The main suspect was arrested on June 5th, but news of the arrest was not released until the overnight hours between June 7th and 8th. This was perfect timing for all the networks to drop reports of the Bush/Blair press conference, and the Downing Street questions.

2005-06-06 Glen’s letter to Newsweek

Except for a small error about which government report would address the Koran desecration charge, it appears that the substance of your much publicized article was correct. In the weeks following the initial outrage over your article, there has been a constant flow of information from various sources confirming its allegations. The reaction of the Bush administration to immediately discredit your publication and request a retraction should at this point require you to do exactly the same. It is my hope that the editors of Newsweek demand a retraction of the media attack launched on you by the Bush administration and furthermore require nothing less than a formal public apology. We live in an age where the initial attack gets all the attention, and the follow-up correction gets little or no press at all. Because of this, it seems the current political media strategy is to go for the initial attack and hope the interest in the story dies before the truth and follow-up corrections are made. The only way to battle this type of deception is to aggressively work to insure that the truth is the biggest story. Set an example for other media outlets to not be afraid and demand the apology you are due.

If he did retaliate, the Bush administration would have an excuse to launch an official full strike against Iraq without waiting for any UN resolutions. A perfect excuse for war. Were we lied to again? YES!

2005-05-25 Senate Deal

In a last minute deal, the battle over the filibuster is avoided, or is it? The deal is that the democrats will approve the 3 most controversial judges, they don’t have to approve the other 4, they will allow a vote on Bolton and they agree not to filibuster except under extraordinary circumstances. Here’s how I see it. The republicans will get these 3 judges passed using the deal as their shield, and the first time the democrats put up opposition to any nominee, they will claim that they are breaking the agreement and ask for a new vote to ban the filibuster. This agreement doesn’t fix the problem; it is only an excuse to push Bolton and the 3 judges through while delaying the filibuster issue until the next disagreement. Where is the benefit for the democrats in this deal? I don’t see any. It’s like the school bully saying, “Give me your lunch money and I won’t beat you up today”. Sounds great, except you will just have to deal with the same problem tomorrow.

2005-05-23 More on changing the rules as you go along.

Next time you think it’s OK for the republicans to just change the rules as they go along try this;

Get on your favorite highway that has a 55mph speed limit and drive at about 85mph. When you get pulled over for speeding, explain to the officer that you shouldn’t get a ticket, because you don’t think the 55mph rule is a good one and it should be changed. The friendly officer will probably tell you that you can call or write your state legislator to discuss the future of speed limits, but today 55 is still the law and today you are going to get a ticket. You don’t change the rules based on each individual situation that doesn’t go in your favor.

2005-05-17 The so called “Liberal Media”

We are a wave of military budget cuts that include base closings. There will always be arguments about what should be cut or what needs more funding, but that’s not the issue here. When a republican administration wants to cut the defense budget, we are bombarded with journalists telling us that they are STREAMLINING the military. If the same proposal happens under an administration controlled by the democrats, this same media tells us they are GUTTING the military. This doesn’t sound like a “liberal media” to me. Now the “Right” is taking over control of PBS. A republican operative is being put in charge if Public Broadcasting. This is a sure way to turn it into a propaganda machine. Do you want to learn more about the mess we call the media? Use the link below to read the address by Bill Moyers to the National Conference on Media Reform

2005-05-18 More on Military Cuts

Everyone I know hates those math word problems that we had to do in school, but the better you are at doing them, the more you understand what the Bush administration is doing. We are looking at proposed cuts in military spending and base closings in an effort to help balance the budget. This is happening while we are expanding military activities around the world in an effort to “fight terror”. These two things seem to be in conflict, and they are. So, how does it work? Normal military spending is part of the budget and the Bush administration has worked very hard to finance the “war on terror” with emergency spending bills that are not part of the budget. As the size of the military decreases, we will have to contract out more and more of our military effort to private contractors at higher costs, but those costs do not show up in the budget and the contractor will make huge profits. This moves costs out of the budget and into those emergency bills and it appears to lower the budget.

The bottom line on all this is, we will spend more, while showing lower costs in the budget and guaranteeing profits for influential contractors. A clever way for Bush to cook the books and make his friends even more wealth at the same time.

2005-05-13 CALL IT WHAT IT IS

So the court says that United Air Lines can default on their pension commitments and the government will pick up the costs. Well, most of the costs. Pension checks will be cut in varying amounts up to 50% of the original expected value. This is a problem for people expecting these checks, but the bigger problem is setting the precedent of government bailout, without prosecuting those responsible. Yes I said prosecuting. The available information shows that the company knew there was going to be a shortfall, but continued to under fund the pension system. Now they were under funding the system, while they were still working hard to guarantee payouts to executives and using that money to improve the balance sheet and keep the stock price up. So they take money from the employees by way of the pension fund, and use it to benefit the executives and stockholders. We have a special name for secretly taking funds from one individual or group and using those funds to benefit another individual or group. It’s called embezzling. I think it’s time to stop talking about broken promises or commitments and start calling it what it is and pressing charges.

Gas Price Fluctuations 2005-04-18

Have you ever noticed, that when OPEC announces they have raised the price of a barrel of oil, the price of gas at the pump increases within 24 hours. On the flip side, when they announce that the price of oil has dropped, we are told that this price adjustment won’t be reflected in the price at the pump until that less expensive crude makes its way through the supply chain and actually reaches the pumps. Although fluctuations may initially seem like a problem for the oil industry, they actually help industry profits, by creating what I’ll call a gouging gap each time the price fluctuates. Enjoy

Patterns of Global Terrorism 2005-04-18

This is a yearly report that looks at terrorist activity throughout the world in an effort to track trends. When this report was released in 2004, the Bush administration spent about 2 weeks gloating that terrorism had decreased because they were doing such a great job addressing the issue. This abruptly stopped when we learned that all the statistics in the report were completely wrong and that we had actually experienced an increase in terrorist activity. Most administrations will try, and are in fact expected to spin any reports that come out, in an effort to make themselves look as if they are doing a good job. The Bush administration has gone to the next step and simply changed the report to be in their favor. The problem is, it didn’t work, and the inaccuracy of the report was quickly discovered. Never at a loss for new ideas, they will not try to alter the report this year, but will attempt the new approach of not issuing the report at all. If it makes them look bad, just make sure it doesn’t exist.

Bush Chasing Osama Sticker (Bumper)

Social Security & Fiscal Irresponsibility

The president says that he has seen the Social Security trust fund, and it is just a worthless stack of paper in a file cabinet in Virginia. This worthless paper is a stack of treasury bonds and if the president says they are worthless, it’s like a CEO saying his company’s stock is worthless. We all know that any CEO who said that would be fired immediately. How does this guy get a free pass for every stupid thing he says or does? Is the general public that stupid? I don’t think so, so what’s up with Bush? Is it just that both laws and common sense don’t apply to him, and somehow that’s OK? Someone explain.

Tom DeLay

Yes folks there is a man more corrupt than any of the members of the Bush administration.

Search articles on your own, you won’t have any trouble finding them.

I don’t usually reprint things written by others, but this one was right on target.

Intelligence report - Spies, Lies and plenty of Whys! (03.04.2005)

A presidential commission was given the task last year to discover what went wrong with the U.S. intelligence on Iraq and its findings seem to place most of the blame on the agencies spies.

Although the report did not find any evidence of pressure being put on the spy agencies to provide the "right" information to carry out the invasion on Iraq, you can be fairly certain that it existed!

The reports that the intelligence agencies apparently supplied was found to be "dead wrong" in almost all areas and the Bush administration have used the commission's report to their advantage by saying that the newly formed national intelligence, headed by John D. Negroponte is even more necessary than they first indicated.

The Bush administration have used the agencies (especially the CIA) like pawns in a game of chess, by sacrificing certain members to obtain greater advantage later.

Bush has always been in a win situation with the Iraq intelligence. The agencies intelligence was good enough to carry out the attack on Iraq (and convince Blair that WMD did exist), but he always knew that if anyone discovered the truth, there were plenty of people to take the fall other than himself!

You can be pretty sure that the Bush administration had already decided to use the CIA as one of the "scapegoats" and George Tenet was the Director at the time, who said that that evidence Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction was "a slam-dunk case''. He resigned as Director (in June 2004) and his reward for apparently giving all this wrong information was to receive the "Medal of Freedom" by Bush in December!

Is it normal to reward someone when they have given you incorrect intelligence? Or was the medal more of a thank you for providing the information that the administration wanted?

It has been clear for a long time that WMD were not going to be found in Iraq and obviously Tenet supplied (or was made to give) incorrect information. Bush knew this long before he gave the medal, so why did he reward a man for supplying such information that led to an illegal invasion of Iraq?

With so much bad intelligence being supplied prior to the invasion of Iraq, how can anyone believe in any future information? What will be so different with Negroponte in charge? What about all the reports that were issued on Iran, who provided this intelligence?

What really seems to be the problem is that the Bush administration (which is controlled by a group of very wealthy businessmen), have already decided (long ago) what course they want to take in the Middle East and other areas, and simply need intelligence that gives them an excuse to take action. It does not have to be based on truth, it just needs to look believable.

The rest of the world can no longer afford to accept U.S. intelligence reports while the present U.S. government is controlled by "outside" forces. The time has come to stop playing political games for gains.

     From http://www.profindpages.com/news/2005/04/03/MN859.htm

Read the full report at http://www.wmd.gov/report/wmd_report.pdf

My favorite quote from this report comes from the 1st line of the 2nd paragraph.

“We conclude that the Intelligence Community was dead wrong in almost

all of its pre-war judgments about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction.”

2005-03-18 More Tax Cuts

In a time when the budget deficit is soaring, our government seems to think the only appropriate action to take is passing $134,000,000,000.00 in new tax cuts. Oh, and these cuts are in capital gains, dividends and Social Security tax on the wealthy. These are all designed to benefit those with wealth more than those without. SURPRISE, SURPRISE, SURPRISE

2005-03-17 V.A.T.

Some have suggested (republicans), that in an effort to simplify the income tax, we should abolish it and move to a Value Added Tax or VAT. The VAT is a fixed percentage national sales tax. What this amounts to is a reverse income tax, where the more you make, the lower the percentage you pay. I’ll explain. A person who can accumulate wealth spends a smaller percentage of their income than a person who can not. The person who cannot accumulate wealth spends 100% of the money they earn and would pay tax on this money. A person, who can accumulate wealth, spends less than 100% of the money they make, and the more wealth they can accumulate the lower the percentage of their income they spend. If we equate the amount of VAT they pay to their income, the percent paid equals, the percent of the tax times the percent of their income they spend. The result of this equation becomes, the more you earn – the lower the percentage you pay. Great idea if you earn millions, better if you earn billions.

2005-03-16 FAKE NEWS?????

If it’s not bad enough that government agencies have been caught paying people to promote their agenda while posing as independent broadcasters or interviewees, now the G.A.O. reveals that as many as 20 government agencies have been producing fake “news” reports promoting Bush policies. Then they have TV stations run them as part of the local news with no acknowledgement that they are government produced propaganda videos, not news. The Bush administration has defended and even encouraged this practice. Is this the liberal media we keep hearing about? Is this even independent media? It seems that all the folks on the right who keep complaining about the “liberal” media have forgotten that they are now producing fake news. This officially guarantees that it is the “right wing” media and they need this thrown in their face every time they complain. By the way, under FCC rules, this practice is also illegal. Produced promotional material must be identified as such. Not doing so, is considered deceptive! How many laws does the Bush administration have to break before people wake up?

2005-03-11 Cleeland is Wrong

Max Cleeland is wrong when he says we should pick our fights. That works sometimes, but at this point he is just wrong. Let me explain. Present day politics give us a situation where the democrats fight on a particular issue, lose the fight and then move onto the next issue. Each one stands alone and is quickly forgotten after the fight is lost and the next one begun. At the same time our president is a serial criminal, who before his re-election has violated Texas law, U.S. law, International law and the U.S. Constitution. He also has complete control leading a one party government. This is a time for the democrat’s gloves to come off. They are not the party of NO, they are the party of YES. Yes, we want to continue the investigation into election irregularities. Yes, we want to help those who can’t help themselves by supporting social programs. Yes, we want to finally know where Bush was during the time he was missing from the Air National Guard. Yes, we think the public should know about the land scam that gave him property for a baseball stadium at pennies on the dollar and then had tax payers pay the fines after the legal challenge. Yes, we all want to know how chasing Bin Laden in Afghanistan turned into chasing Saddam in Iraq. Yes, we want to know what his original Texas drivers license number was, his original arrest record and why the cover up. Yes, we want the public to know how his social security proposal will hurt everyone for generations to come. Yes, Yes, Yes, I could go on forever.  Let’s take a lesson from law enforcement. If you want to ensure the most severe penalty for a serial criminal (Bush), you must establish a pattern. This is a pattern of cover-ups, criminal activity and total lack of interest in anything that doesn’t directly benefit the wealthy. Every proposal, every speech, every executive order and every private business deal by him and his close friends can be used to establish a pattern of criminal activity and an effort to disenfranchise those not in his inner circle. Cleeland says we should pick our fights. It’s all one big fight!

Bush is Robin the Hood Sticker (Bumper)

March 2005, the Bush presidency so far;

We are into the 2nd term so it’s time to recap.

In an effort to piss off the most populous country in the world, Bush refuses to apologize for shooting down a Chinese plane. A great way to start your foreign relations.

After several members of the Bush administration ignore repeated warnings, America suffers the worst attack on U.S. soil in history. Bush uses the fear generated by this event to promote his agenda. He later promotes the National Security Advisor responsible for this failure to Secretary of State.

Republicans believe in less government, so Bush has grown the federal government with new departments and expansion of old departments to the largest this country has ever seen.

Bush proves again that trickle down economics doesn’t work by giving tax breaks to the wealthy and not improving the economy at all. This time it’s call supply side economics.

The Bush tax cut plan helps turn a huge budget surplus when he took office into the largest debt in history. They like to do everything big in Texas, and he really did this one big.

Congress appropriates money to send troops to search for Bin Laden and his followers in Afghanistan which Bush diverts for use to prepare to attack Iraq. (This is a violation of the Constitution.)

Bush LIES to congress, the U.N. and the public about the status of weapons inspections in Iraq and that we know Saddam has weapons of mass destruction to justify starting a war with Iraq. Bush later changes his reason for war several times.

The ID of a covert CIA operative is leaked to the press (an act of treason) after that agent’s husband goes public with information that Bush misled us into war.

Bush announces “major combat operations have ended” in Iraq as a propaganda event and in the post announcement, pre-Iraqi election that follows, more battles are fought and more soldiers are killed than before the announcement.

After The Bush administration tries to blame the prison abuse scandal on a few bad soldiers, we find out that the same abuses were happening in other locations thousands of miles apart and in fact memos are discovered, produced by White House legal counsel, that say Geneva Convention rules do not apply and this type of behavior is acceptable. The chief legal counsel involved is later promoted to Attorney General and the other attorney involved is promoted to Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. The administration tries a new plan to avoid torture by Americans. They begin to fly prisoners they want to torture to other countries that use torture as a standard interrogation technique. They will do the torture for us. This is also illegal under U.S. law.

In an effort to get re-elected Bush constantly quotes how many new jobs he has created, but does not include how many jobs have been lost. (The net is negative.)

Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld continue to insist they know where Iraq’s weapons are and will find them. None are ever found, and the inspectors reports all agree none will be.

Bush says he is no longer interested in Bin Laden and doesn’t spend much time on him. This is the man responsible for the 9-11 attack and the reason we went to war in Afghanistan in the first place. Even though there is great support for the war in Iraq, no one is quite sure how Bin Laden and Afghanistan turned into Iraq and Bin Laden who?

Bush proposes a restructuring of Social Security. This is the most successful government program in history and if anyone can tell me any part of his plan that’s good, they win a prize, because I can’t find anything positive in it. For example, Bush says the plan gives each individual a choice in how they want to invest their retirement money, but doesn’t tell you that the plan only provides a few investment choices that they have already picked for you.

The coalition of the willing, a list of countries that will join in our efforts in Iraq becomes so short, the Bush administration quietly abandons the whole concept.

Several media personalities admit taking money to promote administration policies while appearing to be journalists and not paid spokesman. This is called payola and is illegal.

A male prostitute is admitted to the White House press corp. under an assumed name to pose as a journalist, asking leading questions and writing fake news reports designed to promote the Bush agenda.

Bush nominates Bolton as U.N. Ambassador. This is a man who said, "The (U.N.) Secretariat building in New York has 38 stories. If it lost 10 stories, it wouldn't make a bit of difference," and "There's no such thing as the United Nations". Why would he appoint a man who doesn’t like the U.N..

2005-02-10 The madness continues. Bush called on Jeff Gannon during a rare and nationally televised news conference. Gannon's question attacked Democrats as having ''divorced themselves from reality" and repeated an allegation against Senate minority leader Harry Reid, Democrat of Nevada, that turned out to be a joke by conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh. This “journalist” whose name is not really Jeff Gannon, seems to have access to the White House daily, has journalism credentials from a 2 day seminar, but no real journalistic training, poses leading questions that support the Bush agenda, has written slander articles about several democrats that are obviously fabricated, writes for a bogus news organization that is just a propaganda front for the GOP disguised as a news organization and seems to be tied to some questionable web sites, yes, this Jeff Gannon is starting to smell like a rat. How does he get White House access under an assumed name and who is Talon News? Is this just an elaborate propaganda machine for the Bush administration dressed up as legitimate journalism? How low will they go? Details are still surfacing.

http://americablog.blogspot.com/2005/02/man-called-jeff.html  (This is a good one)

2005-02-09 The president sent his budget to Capitol Hill. Let me sum it up in just a few words;

Wealthy people do not use Amtrak, Food Stamps, Medicaid and others, so these don’t need money.

Wealthy people do need tax cuts, so be sure to include them.

The religious right votes republican, so add more faith based programs or add $ to existing ones.

(Note: a religious group that accepts government grants should lose their tax exempt status.)

(Follow up note: Bush doesn’t think so.)

If you have a plan to slowly take over the world, the military will need more funds.

Want to make the numbers not look as bad as they are? Don’t include any WAR costs in the budget.

Concerned with homeland security? Cut funds to local police and fire department programs. ???

Have a plan to destroy Social Security? Don’t include any of the costs in the budget.

Is this his personal business plan, or is it supposed to be for the whole country?

2005-02-03 Last night was the State of The Union Address and this morning everyone on both sides is doing their analysis. I will not fill this page with obvious comments about the many misleading statements the President included. You can hear or read that anywhere. I instead will focus on something the others seemed to miss. The President contradicted himself within his own speech. Not from one speech to the next, but in the same speech. The topic is Social Security and here’s the issue. After introducing the topic and some statistics, he goes into a lengthy history of congressional proposals to adjust the system, with a focus on democrats who proposed changes in an effort to make the issue seem bi-partisan. He has listed many ideas and now says the issue “will require an open, candid review of the options” and “all these ideas are on the table” and “I will listen to anyone who has a good idea to offer”. Sounds great, the President being open minded. The problem comes when he immediately follows this up with “here’s how the idea works”. This is just the beginning, as next we have, “WE WILL set careful guidelines for personal accounts”, “WE WILL make sure the money can only go into a conservative mix”, “ WE WILL make sure that your earnings are not eaten up by hidden Wall Street fees”, “WE WILL make sure there are good options to protect your investments”, “WE WILL make sure a personal account cannot be emptied out all at once”, “WE WILL make sure the plan is fiscally responsible” and finally, “ permitting all workers to set aside 4 percentage points of their payroll taxes”.

For a person who is open to ideas, he seems to have the whole thing worked out!

Glen on Social Security 2005-01-12

Can someone tell me why we should change Social Security? According to Bush, we should pay the huge transition cost to move to a system that has a higher administrative cost and a high risk with no guaranteed return. Also, everyone on both sides of the issue keeps talking about the drain on the system when the baby-boomers retire, but they never seem to mention the increase in contributions to the system as the echo-boomers enter the work force. I just don’t get it.

Oh, but the way, it’s not your money. It’s our money. If you think it’s your money, then you don’t understand the concept. You could always email me & I’ll try giving you a personal explanation.

2005-01-12 The search for biological, chemical, and nuclear weapons in Iraq ends.

Did we find any?    NO!

Isn’t that why we went to war?

     http://www.boston.com/news/nation/washington/articles/2005/01/12/team_hunting_iraq_wmd_ends_its_search/

January 6, 2005: During a joint session of the House & Senate to accept and certify the electoral vote, a protest is filed to challenge the votes from Ohio. The House & Senate separate to debate the issue. The last time a protest was filed was in 1969 to challenge 1 vote and the last time a challenge to an entire state’s slate of electors was filed was in the 1800’s.

January 7, 2005: After the unusual political events of the previous day, the big political story reported on the opening newscast of NBC’s Today show was that President Bush has a new dog.

Is this how our media should serve us?

We see little or no coverage of controversial or questionable political actions or events, but are constantly served a full plate of propaganda, patriotic images and political fluff.

Ask yourself, if Bill Clinton was president and he destroyed the economy, granted huge contracts to political insiders without any bid process, diverted federal budget funds without the knowledge of congress, lied to congress and the country during a state of the union address, enter a war under false pretence or have his administration caught in a huge human rights/war crimes scandal, would the media cut him any slack?

NO, they would not!

Network programming would be constantly interrupted with special news reports telling us of each new issue and charge against the president and his administration. This would be followed by scheduled specials detailing the charges and the investigations that followed as well as endless commentary about the severity of the charges and the damage the president has done to us and our country. Some would not be satisfied until Clinton was stoned to death in a public square for his horrible crimes.

The difference here is that it’s not Clinton, but Bush who presided over these crimes, so both the media and the public seem willing to give him a free ride. Sure some of these issues appear in the news, but they appear only briefly and are quickly dismissed.

I am disgusted!

On the subject of the Alberto Gonzales confirmation hearings, I think the highlight of the day was the chairman of the panel harassing Ted Kennedy to hurry up. It seems that he was anxious to finish the meeting and just get the confirmation over with. Kennedy seemed to be attempting the extremely radical move of questioning the appointee, which is in fact why they were there.

Broadcaster Armstrong Williams was paid $240,000.00 by the Department of Education to promote “No Child Left Behind”. Years ago when I did radio, I was taught that when a broadcaster receives any compensation to promote anything, that’s called payola. Taking payola is illegal. When we see a commercial, we know it’s a paid advertisement, but when a broadcaster is paid to promote under the guise of regular programming, that’s just wrong. Wasn’t “No Child Left Behind” an under funded program? If there wasn’t enough money, how did they have $240,000.00 for Armstrong Williams?

The following was written by one of my readers Allan Keislar. It is so well written I had to include the entire letter on this page. If you would like to print a copy, click here for a printable version.

CAN THIS REALLY HAPPEN IN AMERICA?

In 1992, Chuck Hagel moved to Omaha and became chairman of American Information Systems (AIS), a leading voting machine company based in Nebraska. After managing AIS for three years, Hagel stepped down as chairman in March, 1995. Two weeks later he announced his bid for U.S. Senate. Voting machines made and programmed by AIS would count about 85 percent of the votes cast in this election.1

This was Hagel's first try for public office and he was not well known. Still, in the Republican primary, Hagel upset the incumbent Attorney General of Nebraska. Then, in the election, Hagel pulled what Business Week called a "landslide upset," beating popular Democratic Gov. Ben Nelson, who had led in polls from the outset. The Washington Post (1-13-1997) said Hagel's "Senate victory against an incumbent Democratic governor was the major Republican upset in the November election." Hagel won virtually every demographic group, including many largely Black communities that had never before voted Republican. He was the first Republican to win a U.S. Senate seat in Nebraska in 24 years.

Why weren't people suspicious of Hagel's connection with AIS? Mainly because Hagel hadn't told them his little secret: "What he never disclosed was his salary from or stock holdings in the voting machine company whose machines had counted his votes.... This is not a gray area. This is lying....Reporters surely would have inquired about it as they researched stories about his amazing upset victories.”2

Hagel was re-elected in 2002 by a huge, record margin. As his hagel.senate.gov website says, Hagel "was re-elected to his second term in the United States Senate on November 5, 2002 with 83% of the vote. That represents the biggest political victory in the history of Nebraska.”3 Hagel's defeated Democratic rival, Charlie Matulka, wondered about the results. First, he was surprised to discover, when he went to the polls to vote for himself, that his ballot was already marked--for Hagel!4 Knowing of Hagel's continuing relationship with AIS, Matulka tried to verify the results. Matulka was shocked to learn that Nebraska had just passed a law prohibiting him, or any government-employee election worker, from looking at the ballots. Only machines made and programmed by AIS could count votes in the state--even in a recount.5 In the 2004 presidential election, AIS (renamed Election Systems and Software, ES&S), along with its larger sister corporation Diebold Election Systems counted about 80% of the votes cast.6

Can this really happen in America? The 2002 Georgia elections, where Diebold's new touch-screen voting machines were used for the first time on a state-wide basis, sounded only too similar. Newsweek said the Republican underdog's win in the governor's race "confounded pollsters," and quoted computer scientist David Dill: ("I think the risk [of a stolen election using these machines] is extremely high.”) and Avi Rubin, (a computer-security expert and professor at Johns Hopkins University, who called “the protections against fraud and tampering …'far below even the most minimal security standards.'…'Anyone in my basic security classes would have done better.' “7). Such flaws led California to ban Diebold’s new touch screen machines in April, 2004, its top election official calling for a criminal investigation of Diebold.8

There is growing evidence that voting machines used in the 2004 election were also manipulated. In Broward County, Florida, electronic voting machines counted backwards—as more votes were cast, the official vote count went down.9 Electronic voting machines also produced extra votes: as widely reported, a “computer glitch” gave Bush 4,258 votes in a Columbus, Ohio suburb , where only 638 people voted.10 But glitches cannot explain, nor has the mass media reported, that hundreds if not thousands or precincts throughout Ohio also had discrepancies--researcher Dr. Richard Phillips has shown that over 246,919 extra votes for president were falsely reported in Cuyahoga County alone.11 Similarly, Florida's official election website showed 161,722 more votes for president than the total number of people who actually voted, as reported by the counties (7,588,422 votes for president were shown, but only 7,426,700 people had voted); over 95% of the counties that showed excess votes for president use the Diebold touch-screen system.12 The clearest direct proof of vote fraud, however, comes from Volusia County, Florida: supposedly "official" but unsigned computer printouts (produced Nov. 15 after a public records request by blackboxvoting.org), altered from the original printouts signed by the polling officials on Nov. 2. These records show that hundreds of false votes were given to Bush in every single precinct examined.13

There are also indirect ways to reveal computerized voting fraud. Looking at discrepancies between expectations--from voter registration, pre-election surveys, and exit polls--and the final "official" machine-produced results are one of the best ways to show this. For example, did Florida's Lafayette County (82% Democrats and 13% Republicans) really give Kerry only about 1/4 of its votes and Bush almost 3/4 (though the Democratic Representative won 2/3 of its votes)?14 That's possible, of course, but did Bush really get so many more votes around the country than exit polls showed? There is only one chance in 50,000 (.002%), that Bush would average a 4.15% gain in every single one of the sixteen states for which data was made publicly available.15 Note especially that exit polls gave the key swing states of Ohio, Florida, Iowa, New Mexico, and Nevada to Kerry--but they were all then reported as having voted for Bush:

15 www.bluelemur.com/index.php?p=405 (Early exit polls showing Kerry leading were later altered in Bush's favor. For example, at 12:21 a.m. on Nov. 3, with 1963 respondents, CNN showed Kerry leading Bush in Ohio by 2% among men and 6% among women, but at 1:41 a.m., with 2020--just 57 more--respondents, falsified results were announced: Bush now supposedly led Kerry by 5% among men and was tied among women. This 6% change, with just 3% more respondents, is mathematically impossible, even if every new respondent had voted for Bush. See www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=1293911&mesg_id=1293911. Dr. Steven F. Freeman, U. of Pennsylvania Research Methods Professor, calculates the odds of the large exit poll anomalies in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Florida occurring together by chance or random error at only one in 250,000,000 (see www.buzzflash.com/alerts/04/11/The_unexplained_exit_poll_discrepancy_v00k.pdf).

Quotes; It’s a shame they don’t hold their own country to the same standards they expect from the Ukraine.

Bush: “There’s just a lot of allegations of vote fraud that place their elections, the validity of their elections in doubt… The position of our government is that the will of the people must be known and heard… These elections ought to be open and fair… The only good deal is one that’s verifiable. Any election in any country must reflect the will of the people.”

Powell: “We cannot accept this result as legitimate because it does not meet international standards and because there has not been an investigation of the numerous and credible reports of fraud and abuse… We call for a full review of the conduct of the election and the tallying of election results… It is time for Ukrainian leaders to decide whether they are on the side of democracy or not, whether they respect the will of the people or not.”

Biden: Ukraine’s leaders should immediately invalidate the election results, invite an independent commission to investigate the numerous reports of fraud and protect all peaceful demonstrators.”

Hastert: “In order for democracy to flourish, citizens must be able to exercise their votes freely, fairly, and without intimidation. Hopefully, Ukraine’s election in three weeks won’t experience the rampant voting problems, reports of fraud, and allegations of campaign corruption that marred last month’s contest. Ukrainians have the right to be heard and their votes accurately counted at the ballot box.”

Glen on Creation Verses Evolution 2004-12-08

As the debate rages on, why is it so hard for people in America to understand that Creation and Evolution are not exclusive of each other? This trouble with understanding the connection between Creation and Evolution seems to be related to a lack of understanding of both.

If we believe that God created, and still creates all the creatures of the earth, we would also have to believe that any mutation or deformity is also God’s creation. A child born with Down syndrome, six fingers, one arm or any other variation from the norm is still one of God’s creations.

Next we consider Darwin, who proposed the concept of “Natural Selection”. This idea simply says that some life forms are more environmentally advantaged so they thrive, while others die out. This is a simple idea that does not challenge the concept that all these life forms were created by God. So here’s the connection.

God creates a child who genetically has a larger nose with more hairs and membranes inside that help to filter out pollutants. This child can pass the genetic change on to their children while at the same time air pollution increases and normal children suffer more respiratory difficulty. After many generations and huge numbers of people have inherited this change, these large nosed people dominate the Earth, because the small nosed people who can’t adjust to the increased pollution have been dying off. Soon, there are only large nose people.

Success! Darwin’s concept of natural selection has been initiated and fulfilled by God’s creatures proving that Creation and Evolution can peacefully coexist.

Glen on Religious Symbols in Public Places 2004-12-20

I have heard several people on radio call in shows complain about replacing “Merry Christmas” with “Happy Holidays”, and removal of nativity scenes from public places and still keeping a Hanukkah Menorah. They ask; Why do we have to be so sensitive to the other religions? We are a Christian country, why can’t we display a nativity?

Wow, where do I start? I am always amazed at people who think their way is the only way and there is no reason to learn anything about the customs of others. Even more amazing to me is these people who complain the loudest are usually the people who have the most limited understanding of the origin, traditions and customs of their own religion.

First, we are not a Christian country! There are a huge number of Christians in this country, but there are also people from almost every other religion in the world. I’m not talking about a handful of people from these other religions. I’m talking about large numbers of people that represent each of these “other” religions. Moreover, we have no state religion and our founding fathers were very careful to avoid naming one.

Now let’s examine that nativity verses menorah issue. If you are Christian, you should have no problem with ANY Jewish religious symbol. Judaism is part of your religious heritage too. Jesus was a Jew, and he never said, forget about everything that happened before I got here. He followed Jewish laws, studied Jewish teachings, celebrated Jewish holidays and came up with a few new ideas to draw in and teach those who drifted from the morally conscious pathway. Jesus would never find any Jewish religious symbol offensive.

As a Jew however, Jesus would have a problem with the nativity, a statue of Mary, or a crucifix. A plain cross, or a Christmas tree, would be just fine. Why, you ask? If the Christians out there would take a moment to remember there Jewish heritage, they would recall a law against “Graven Images”. The law, still observed by Jews, would accept the use of the plain cross as a Christian religious symbol, but the cross with an image of Jesus on it would be very offensive. The nativity would fall into this category as well.

I don’t have enough space here or the time to address all the religions represented here in the U.S., but I will make one general statement about the Muslims and the Jews that most people forget. Both religions trace back to one man, Abraham. He is the father of monotheism. The division comes one generation later with two half brothers Isaac and Ishmael. From these half brothers come these two great religions and just the understanding that they are half brothers should begin to explain today’s conflicts. Family conflicts and divisions can run deep, and this division has continued for 5000 years. At this point in history, I’m sure there isn’t anyone who can tell you how it started, but we all know where it’s taken us. After 5000 years, there isn’t any quick fix that can make it all better. All we can do is try to be understanding.
